3rd Trimester

Sleepless nights and pain

Hi ladies, I am 31 weeks now, and have been having really painful hips even when using my pregnancy pillow, and discomfort in my lower abdomen only through the night.
I hardly sleep, and have really stressful dreams. Have you been experiencing the same things? Any suggestions? Thank you

Re: Sleepless nights and pain

  • I sure have! My hips just ache at night from sleeping on my sides, and I have the hardest time falling asleep due to anxiety. I'll lie awake and stress over everything baby related - finances, how much my life is going to change after he's born, labor, etc. It's ridiculous. Some nights I take a couple Benadryl to help me sleep, but I don't want it to become a habit. I'm planning on talking to my OB about it at my next appointment. In the meantime, I've heard that drinking a glass of warm milk (even though it's a cliché) can help sometimes.

  • I'll give it a try. Glad it's not just me. The hip thing is really weird, kind of feels like leg cramp but in the hips. Maybe it's where they are changing to prepare for labor? I dunno. Going to talk to my midwife next week.
  • I thik it might have something to do with your hips loosening more in preparation for childbirth?
  • It happens to me almost 3-4 times a week.  I wake up and my hips are KILLING me.  I find that sleeping on my left side isn't quite as painful, which is funny because I normally slept on my right side or stomach pre-pregnancy.  I have the Boppy Pregnancy pillow which comes apart into 3 pieces.  I can wedge each piece to fit comfortably around my body and sometimes that will do the trick.  I was only using the contoured part to wedge between my legs.  Now I I take the small piece that's supposed to fit under my belly and position it right under my hips, to give a little more cushion for my hips to absorb. It has seemed to work pretty well.  Maybe you can try folding up a light weight blanket and putting that right under your hips and maybe down towards your legs to create a little more cushion for you.  I'd say it might feel awkward if it ends up raising your body up from your mattress enough to feel un-level, but hopefully I am making sense lol.
  • Thanks for the tips! It's such a weird feeling. Pregnancy does strange things to the body... I thought I was lucky and had avoided the side affects but I guess not! @teachmegs817
  • I'm currently at 34 weeks, and I feel your pain! I had this starting at 29 weeks. My problem is I can't get comfortable at all, and nothing really soothes the pain for long. :-S No matter how I move around, how I sit or stand, I hurt! What's bad is a lot of my BH Contractions set right into my left hip and upper left leg only, and cramps me up something fierce! Which makes it tough to sit or stand! I've used heat/icy patches for it all, and that helps for about a good 3 hours. Pretty much the only thing that helps some!
  • I totally feel ya. Maybe I'm also getting BH contractions in the hips... Would explain a lot. I might try with the heat pack or a warm hot water bottle. Thanks! @ZoeyRaeJames
  • @jodisgardner I too have experienced very little in terms of negative side affects of pregnancy, except the hip pain and now just starting up with a little acid reflux and indigestion.  Just last night I woke up with a killer pain in my right hip and I was sleeping on my left! It was as if, my leg was raised too much by the pillow being in between my legs and my muscles couldn't take it any longer.  I was half alseep and woke up this morning saying to myself; "Was I really giving myself a butt/hip massage half asleep to work out this pain in my leg" lol
  • I totally feel ya! Been getting the exact same things. It's weird when it starts happening this late in the game... Feels unexpected. @teachmegs817
  • Have you tried a sleepy time tea? It might help relax you to sleep.

I'm awake for about 1-2 hours every night. My anxiety seems to effect me most at night time and I too have stressful dreams. I haven't had hip pain for quite a few weeks (currently 33w5d) but my lower back often spasms, and I have a bad shoulder which wakes me up a lot.

My doctor recommended Prenatal massage when I was having a lot of hip pain! I never did it because I am scared of massages, but she said it would really help!
  • I have chamomile most nights. Don't really feel like it helps me much unfortunately. I also think my restlessness is anxiety related. I have recently moved house, and am still working, so I'm hoping once we properly settle in and I stop work that maybe it'll get better. @SarahFoley725 @chaelainev thanks for the advise ladies. I hope your sleeping patterns get better soon as well
  • I'm sorry you're having a tough time. I've been taking a warm bath with epsom salt before bed and having DH rub on my back it helps relax me a lot.
  • Thanks Sarah! I'll keep trying @SarahFoley725
  • Hey guys I have a questions
I'm 30 weeks pregnant on Tuesday with twin girls and last night I had lower abdominal pains uncomfortable through the night had my support pillow on me. I don't know if it was just stretching or if I was in early labour. What do u guys think about this and what I should do as well ? Xx
  • Epsom salt bath. I did it last night and the pain I've had for weeks is nearly gone. It made for a much more comfortable night.
