Paragard vs mirena

I just had my 6wk checkup and I have to pick a new birth control. My doctor said my best bet is paragard because there is no hormone and it won't effect my depression symptoms or hormonal sensitivity like the others will. I am all for it except it's an iud and I hated it when I had mirena. It hurt when I worked out or had sex, it gave me cysts, and made my periods worse.
Has anyone tried both paragard and mirena? Can you compare/contrast them please?

Re: Paragard vs mirena

  • I only had paragard but I hated it. I had very heavy and frequent periods. I had it removed after a year.

  • I had them both, first Mirena then paragard. Mirena made me batshit crazy the first 3 months until I adjusted to the hormones. The reason I switched to Paragard was because though my period was regular and extremely light, it lasted for 10 days. I'd rather have a shorter heavier period. I only had Paragard for about 3 months before I got pregnant (due to either misplacement or moving out of position on its own.) My period was regular right away, maybe a little heavier than naturally.
Your concerns don't sound like anything will be different with Paragard. If Mirena hurt then paragard probably will too. And typically periods are heavier and have more cramping with paragard.
  • We're using condoms and tracking my cycle (once I get my period back) for birth control until we try for our next in a year and a half. I didn't want to go back on the pill for that short amount of time, and I feel so much better when not taking the pill. Yeah, condoms are lame, but it beats the mood swings and migraines I experienced while on the pill.
