  • When we went for our anatomy scan they just did it. We didn't ask for it or pay extra.
  • They flipped to it without us asking so I have a couple of shots in 4D but they are so creepy I wouldn't have done it separately.
  • They showed us baby in 3D during our anatomy scan, something we didn't ask for or want. It was so creepy and we couldn't even see anything because the umbilical cord was in front of baby's face.

  • Not medically necessary so I *probably* won't get one. However my good friend is the u/s tech at my OB and she's switched over to 3D/4D for just a minute to give me a pic with each of my first 3 babies at my 30-32w sonogram, so I may end up with a pic anyway. I wouldn't do it before 30ish wks though if I was having one for the sole purpose of seeing baby, bc their tiny faces tend to look a little "cuter" (less weird alien skull) when they have a bit more fat in their cheeks.

  • We hadn't planned on getting one with our first baby.  It wasn't worth the expense to us, but our OB got some new equipment and asked if the tech could try it out on me, so at 34 weeks we got some pretty adorable pictures for free.

We won't go out and pay for it for this baby, but I believe our new OB switches over from normal view to 3d/4d view so we'll probably end up with a few pictures of him too.
  • I've never heard of them being done in regular scans here - it's typically something you have to pay out of pocket for, something I'm not going to do. I'll wait to see her beautiful face on her birthday. :)
  • I did it with my first, and it kind of creeped me out. It was nice to see him, but I thought he looked so strange that I was worried something was wrong with him (he was fine). We didn't do it with our second, although we had a bunch of extra regular ultrasounds with her to check her growth, so it was nice to be able to see her so much. While I'd like to be able to see this baby again before he's born, I just am not a fan of the 3D/4D ultrasounds. So hopefully everything will go well and we won't need to see him again until he is born

    Ditto *cringe*
  • They did it without asking at my anatomy scan... I don't know if they'll do it again or when I will have another ultrasound, but I'm not going to get any optional scans... only what's necessary.  Just my preference, I am not against the whole 3d option.  :)
  • I had on with my 2nd baby around 32 weeks and it was neat to see how much the ultrasound looked like her when she was born. But I have seen other people's 3/4d pics when the baby doesn't have the extra fat and they tend to look creepy or completely odd. If we were going to get one with this one I would definitely wait until after 30 weeks again. Part of me wants to but then I don't want to end up with a weird looking ultrasound, if my baby looked weird I would probably wonder the rest of my pregnancy if the baby was really going to look so disfigured. So, eh, not sure.
  • I'll have 3 ultrasounds in my 3rd trimester to check on babys size due to a pre-existing condition and the techs always turn the 3D/4D on 'for fun.' I don't really like it and I'd rather just wait and be totally suprised, but then my curiosity gets the best of me and I end up looking.  With DS3 his face was smooshed up against my placenta most of the time so we never got any really great shots and it was mostly just creepy.  I definitely wouldn't pay for an elective one.

  • I agree, I wouldn't have paid extra for it. I can also see where some people might find it creepy, but to not want one because you'll be afraid the baby will be disfigured? I don't understand that logic.

I don't think anyone meant that if they saw a 3D ultrasound, they'd see their baby would have a disfigurement. I think it's in reference to how 3D ultrasounds work and how they distort images and can cause creepy images or cause unnecessary worry (does baby's chin look like that or is it the distortion?). If it's not a clear image then why bother scaring me even for a split second?

Edited: too sleepy to pay attention to my own wording as I type.

My baby looks like a lizard right now. Those far apart eyes though >-)
  • I would have liked to have one but unfortunately the closest place that does them is over a hundred miles away and I physically can't make the trip. I live in a small town in the middle of know where.
  • I have no interest in getting one. By the time they can do it, I'm only a few months from seeing the baby face to face and then I can take all the pictures I want for free--AND those pictures will look better! The 3d ones are spooky looking more often than not.

  • Last time when they checked growth at 38 weeks, the tech surprised me with one.

Not sure what to expect this time, but I have no plan to.
  • I'm high risk and the office I'm seen at has the ability so they just do it without me asking.

  • I am one of the odd ones out on this board and I really like them. We had one at an elective scan to find out the gender at 16 weeks and will go back to have another one between 28-32 weeks. I had one at that time with DS and I thought it was a really neat to see his face.

  • @thiblm maybe that's why they did it for me. I'm labeled high risk because of another condition, didn't even think that's why they may have done it without asking.
  • My ultrasound tech always turns it on for a few minutes. I never find them flattering. In fact, I find they just make me paranoid. Sometimes depending on how it is coming through sometimes it looks like something looks strange or weird.
  • I'm with a bunch of the other girls on here, they just did it on during my anatomy scan without asking. It's was cool to see, but not something I would pay to get.
  • our tech switched over to it at for a minute at both our 16-wk and our 20-wk so we saw the images - not cute. they'll probably keep switching over with subsequent ultrasounds (every 4 wks in our case), but I wouldn't pay extra for it.

  • We had one done to confirm gender, I'm 23 weeks. They recommend after 25 weeks, 30 weeks for plus size mamas, for better facial features. I thought it was fun but kinda wished we waited a bit longer for better face pics :)
  • @estrellabrillante that's one of the nicest ones I've seen!! My friends have been straight outta horror movies. No joke, my husband choked on a beer when one of our friends showed us theirs.
  • Here, they just do it at the same time and flick between 3D and normal... We don't have to pay or schedule a scan to have it done. Though it creeps me out when I open the folder with the prints we get given at the end, haha! Maybe the next one won't be as weird as little lady should look a little more human :)
  • I got one with my first son at 27 weeks amazing experience!!
  • The further along I get with this second LO, the more I feel like a hypocrite because I'm really starting to get curious about what he looks like (will he look like brother?).  That, and I'm having such a hard time choosing a name, that in the back of my mind I'm thinking maybe if I saw him one of the names would present itself as the clear winner.  So I may go against my own original thinking and opt for an elective one around 32-33 weeks.

    I'm crazy and hormonal though.
