Slower flow nipple for bottle fed baby

My baby has tongue tie which we haven't corrected because the pediatrician said it was mild and "not that bad". We had latch issues so now I pump and give via bottle. It seems she has been so gassy which makes her colicky and not sleep well at night. when she feeds from the bottle it seems like the milk dribbles out (maybe from poor seal) and she swallow air maybe. She burps well afterwards but usually very fussy after the feed and at night can't sleep. She's 5 weeks and we are thinking about using a premise bottle nipple instead of the "1". We did that in the beginning with her but figured she's 5 weeks now! Any thoughts? Does tongue tie make babies swallow air with the bottle?

Re: Slower flow nipple for bottle fed baby

  • My now 8 year old had major latch issues and needed to be bottle fed with s preemie nipple the whole time he used a bottle. His dr told us that as he got older and stronger that he would naturally increase his suck and therefore increase the flow from the nipple so increasing the flow rate of the nipple in addition to his increased sucking was way to much and woils cause spitting up and extra gas.
Now we are back in the same boat with this LO. She is a preemie with latching issues (just like her brother) and we are using dr brown ultra preemie nipples. She hasn't had any issues with spitting up or gas.

  • My LO had the exact same problem with bottles until we had her tongue tie corrected. Her pediatrician and an ENT said she didn't need correction. We went to a pediatric orthodontist and he found and corrected tongue tie, lip tie and buccal ties. She was immediately able to take a bottle correctly and had WAY less gas! All of our BF issues are gone as well.
  • This chart might be helpful. I use the Dr. Brown's, but my LO still seems to be gassy most of the time.
