Unhappy baby /colic ??

My 5 weeks old DD seems to have only 4 phases during the day - sleeping /feeding /fussing / crying. She maybe spends only 15-20% of the day awake and not crying but otherwise If she's awake she's crying. She doesn't sleep well at night and barely naps during the day (not like most newborns). Could this be colic? I tried reflux med/ increasing feeds / gripe water/even tried to entertain her on swing with mobile and toys /rattles and she seems to just always cry or fuss. It's not completely unconsolable she will be rocked to sleep for about 20 mins and then she wakes up and it starts all over again until the next feed. She weighs 9.5lbs and has 3oz. Every 3 hours but sometimes asks for it sooner! Any thoughts or advice? If it's colic I guess it's gunna be a long 3 months of maternity leave :(

Re: Unhappy baby /colic ??

  • My 4 week old sleeps great, however her 3 hour awake period usually between 11pm-2am or 4am-7am is crying. Won't eat won't snuggle, won't burp, has clean diaper, won't swing. We walk around I sing I soothe I try everything. Gripe water. Nothing. I'm curious to hear responses on this topic.

  • Experiencing the same as PP. So frustrated! I've tried colic drops, gas drops, gripe water. Walking while bouncing helps but I am so tired and don't want to do it for three hours twice a day. Sorry I don't have any advice. Just experiencing the same thing and it sucks!
  • My first cried or was fussy the majority of the day for almost 4 months. Silent reflux/colic both whatever. It.was.awful.  Not sure if reflux meds finally started working at 4 months (switched to Prevacid tablets) or he just outgrew colic.  Anyway, just wanted to say I've been there and it will pass.  It doesn't seem like when you are stuck in it but just know at some point it will seem like a long time ago and a very short period of time that things were that bad.  Our oldest is now the happiest kid and has been since about 4 months :) Just make sure you take time for yourself and get/accept help when you can.  Hang in there.

  • Our crying window is also 11 to 2 am. We do bottle-bath-bed now and that seems to help a little. And waking her up every couple hours during the day to feed seems to help. I've read the colic stage starts around 3 weeks, peaks at 6 weeks and then is over by 3 or 4 months once baby learns to soothe themselves.

  • My first was crazy colicky - like, would cry 3-6 hours straight regularly, no sleep in between with inconsolable crying. It happens, and it sucks... But it does end.

I hope yours isn't headed that was, but a few suggestions to help:

Try white noise. Look into the five s' from Dr. Karp. For sleep, try a 30% incline or bolstering onto their side. Try getting some fresh air - lots of walks. Baby wearing is your best friend -- add a paci. Also, don't overstimulate. When they're crying their head off and something isn't working, the instinct is to try something else. Let the something else be a calm darkened room and a swaddle.

I hope you find what works for your LO! I'm sorry, I know how awful it is :(
  • Around 6 weeks is when baby's fussiness is at its peak so your baby could be hitting it early. Also the first leap/wonder week is around 4/5 weeks so there is a chance that could be it too. I highly suggest the book the wonder weeks or getting the app for it. During the first leap babies get fussy and want to be cuddled all the time. I would also suggest the happiest baby on the block which is another good book that deals with crying and sleeping.
  • We had a similar issue. My daughter is 2 weeks old. She hadn't slept more than an hour and a half until yesterday, and spent hours crying. It turns out that she suffers from food allergies. About 1 in 200 EBF babies have some food intolerance, and more in FF babies.
  • The three rule: 3 hrs of crying at least 3 days a week for 3 weeks then yes it is colic.

  • Have you tried a different bottle? Dr browns are amazing
  • I recently switched from the Mommy's Bliss drops, which worked great and we're recommended by my Pediatrician, to Udo's infant probiotics found on VITACOST website. I found them on amazon as well, but Vitacost ships with an ice pack to help ensure viability of the live cultures.
My reason for switching was for higher available cultures in the product ( 1 million to 3 billion) and the variety of cultures (drops only have one kind of culture). The only con is the new product is a powder and I give mixed into 1st morning bottle of breastmilk. I usually pump 1st thing in the morning, so it's not a hassle for us and my little one is rarely gassy and is regular without change in consistency. Very happy with the product and my Pediatrician highly recommends probiotics for preventing and treating colic.
Bonus I do not seem to have any problems watching what I eat and making my little one's stomach upset
  • Currently dealing with the witching hour. It will pass, as do all phases with babies!
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one! I am starting to think there's something wrong with my baby. Turning on our tub faucet has helped us during the crying fits. She seems to be uncomfortable from gas, bad gas. So I feel it's what I'm eating. I started supplement formula when she is screaming hungry, but refuses my boob. Going to pediatrician today, hoping for some answers. I mean, shouldn't our babies be able to be awake and not screaming for at least 10 min a day?!

Honestly, if there's one silver lining - it's that we are not alone! I love my daughter to death and her cuteness is her saving grace haha but literally whenever she is awake she is crying /fussing /or crying violently!
I can't even warm her bottle up in 4 mins without her screaming ! I have resorted to pre-pouring her bottles in the morning and setting them aside in the fridge so I am ready to go for the day - whatever it brings !!
  • Please do share if pediatrician has any suggestions !
  • I'm going through this as well. Some days are worse than others. Last night was bad, he was just screaming but had his eyes closed , like a night terror or something . Plus the gas isn't helping either ... Poor little man I feel so bad for him. I go see the doctor on the 23rd. I wonder if he might need the formula switched again ... He is on the gentle ease type now. i wonder if he has a milk allergy.
  • If baby has a milk allergy they are not just unhappy/gassy. My pediatrician will not diagnose a milk allergy without bloodygreen mucus filled poop. This is what you get with a milk allergy. I stopped eating dairy and soy on Wednesday... She is getting better but still cried for 7 hours without stopping last night.
  • I switched from gentle ease to similac sensitive today. I don't think she's allergic but rather has a sensitive digestive system - maybe one formula doesn't break down in her system as good as the other. She isn't vomiting it up or having bloody stools. I guess either this will pass with time or she will just start to tolerate one formula or the other.
In the meantime, coffee = my salvation! Plus i put the tv on and try to distract myself while she fussing and I'm holding her. My back and arms are starting to hate me!
  • Just got back from the doctor. Apparently what we are all experiencing is normal for this age. She actually has 2 kids, one being 2 months old. She said their digestive tract is just under developed at this age, causing bad gas and fussing. It peaks at 6 weeks, but should get better after that. If baby is pooping and the poop is soft (can't for it into a ball) and peeing then all is good. She recommended the standard bicycle legs, tummy time, warm towel on abdomen to help release gas. As far as formula is concerned, she swears they are all the same but if you find one that works use it, but after 6 weeks you should be able to us whatever is cheapest. Also b said that dairy is the only concern for breastfeeding mommas. So basically we are screwed for another cpl weeks, but it will get better! I hope so!
  • Thanks for the update!!!! We can get thru this!!!!
  • Great update! Thank you !
  • What @waltersmom83 said is what I've been told too. Clearly we're all experiencing the same thing. I switched to gentle ease with my first and switched this baby too but I'm now pretty sure it's just the phase we're in. Oh well... :(
  • I'm pretty sure LO is colicky, but he is having issues passing gas and pooping still even on the gentle type of formula. He just screams in his sleep trying to pass gas. It's the second night in a row. He has been on enfamil, simalic and I am thinking of trying gerber good start . I've also use gas drops which have helps a lot but he still is in. A lot of pain

I've tried a couple of different formulas, gentle ease and now similar sensitive. They both haven't made a huge different honestly - and have iron which constipated the baby. Still searching for the right formula ...
  • Exactly... I'm happy I'm not alone!!! I went and bought enfamil gentle ease to try that again it seemed to help before I switched to the simalic. I only switched bc I get WIC and that's the formula they give out, but if it does not work for LO I will just get what does... If this doesn't work I will try using gerber.

That's what we call cry time around here! Hope yours passes quickly.
