Just sad

My SO birthday gift to me was a new ring this year! He kept saying just wait to wear it so I we can make sure it fits. But I didn't listen! About a week ago my hands and feet and everything else decided to swell..........and now I'm afraid I'm going to go have to get my ring cut off! IT WILL NOT BUDGE! This is so sad! Anyone else dealing with swelling?

Re: Just sad

  • I had to use dish soap to get off my wedding ring the other day due to swelling, if that doesn't work for you my jeweler friend said windex almost always does the trick!

  • You could try putting that hand in some ice. The cold can help temporarily. I'd also use some soap, olive oil, other slippery substance.

I took all rings off months ago. It sucks, but I've been wearing my wedding ring on a necklace.
  • Try wrapping your finger with scotch tape and then getting it soapy. The idea is to make your finger thinner so that the ring will just slip off.

  • I had to take mine off in September. It literally broke my heart and I apologize to DH every other day because I feel so bad about it! Try some hair conditioner when you are in the shower. That's how I got mine off. Plus my hair looked good and it helped my dry skin!!!
  • I've heard you can wrap your finger tightly with dental floss and then slip your ring off.
  • Btw, OP, I think there's a whole thread where we lament about swelling. So yes, lots of us are dealing with it! I even posted a pic of my cankles to Instagram last night. :)
  • When I say I HAVE TRIED EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOUR SUGGESTIONS........NO LUCK!! :(( my finger is literally big above the ring .....iI onto know I'm going to give it a couple more days hopefully
  • I would definitely also suggest decreasing your sodium intake (if you've been eating a lot of processed or fast food) and increase your water intake. I'm honestly baffled the ice didn't help. That stuff can shrink anything... if you know what I mean. haha... but really, I hope you don't have to get it cut off @nickimonroe!

@TomekiaB may have some dietary suggestions that could help decrease the swelling.
  • I say don't wait it out. If you've tried every trick and you can't get it off, it's time to go get it cut off by a jeweler. Unfortunately, I had a ring stuck on my hand after a fall and I had to have 14 surgeries. Obviously that's not going to happen to you, but if you can't get the ring off… It's better to get it taken off now before it becomes an emergency situation because your finger could be at risk. It will be a whole lot sadder not have a finger then to cut your ring off.

And please don't do things like cutting off the circulation to the finger more than it already is. If it starts to get cold or blue or purple ash, go right into the ER.

As @court11152325 said their are some dietary things that help fluid retention. I'm a registered dietitian but this is NOT medical advice since I know nothing about your medical history. Decreasing sodium and making sure you are drinking enough water can help fluid retention. Electrolytes include not only sodium but calcium, magnesium and potassium--and the balance of all 4 is important. Often times increasing intake of foods that have plenty of calcium and potassium while decreasing higher sodium foods will help fluid retention more than just limiting sodium/salt. This is the really basic theory behind the DASH diet (DASH means Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, Hypertension is high blood pressure). This theory can sometimes help the swelling (edema) in legs and feet. If you have a medical reason to limit potassium--obviously you should not increase your potassium intake. These tips often help women who have gained a lot  of water weight over a few days to weeks to stabilize their rate of weight gain to their recommended amount per week for their pregnancy.

All that being said if your ring is already stuck and you've tried multiple methods for removal I'd recommend following @niki6499 and @bostonbaby1 advice for dealing with the ring since the diet changes may take a few days to notice improvement and while it often helps swelling it may not be enough especially if your finger is already swollen from the trauma of trying to get the ring off.

The ER will most likely have a ring cutter. I got my grandmothers ring (inherited) stuck on my finger in high school--I couldn't get it back over my knuckle so my dad took me to the ER and they had me ice my hand for about 20 minutes and used KY Jelly, it still wouldn't come off so they cut it, it took about 2 minutes and the nurse used a little manual circular saw that had a shield to protect my finger. I later had the jeweler add half a size to this ring and you can't tell it ever happened.

My jeweler recommends the windex method, which I have found works slightly better than cool soapy water. My knuckle is where my rings get tight and my knuckle is slightly smaller if my finger is relaxed versus straight. Good luck!

  • I work at an Urgent Care and there is an art to the dental floss method! Go to Urgent Care. They can do it! Also use hemorrhoid cream to reduce swelli g and sleep with finger elevated. I got my ring stuck after delivery with first and waited it out. 2 days and the swelling went down.
  • No, no, no don't cut it off, there's this awesome video of a doctor using his mask to get rings off, let me see if I can Google it!

I've also heard that Windex works miracles.  Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies......DH came home from work yesterday and while I was sleeping & he cut it off! Freaked me out because I felt my finger tingling and woke up! Missed the snap of the band and all....and now it's just sitting there. I cried but I still got my finger!
