Nonstop crying at 5 weeks

My baby has been up for over 13 hours straight. He only wants to nurse but I literally don't have any milk in me because he has depleted me. He is howling as if I put him in hot water when I put him in his crib or rock n play. It's the most piercing cry I've heard from him. He is not a colicky baby. I checked wonder weeks but didn't see anything. He is swaddled, in dark lighting, shushed, rocked, and fed. Does anyone have any suggestions or rationale as to what happened to my sweet baby?

Re: Nonstop crying at 5 weeks

  • I had a few days around week 4 or 5 like that. It was tough! We tried everything and he would be up screaming and crying all night. It lasted less than a week and then he snapped out of it. Now he's just about seven weeks and still sleeping well at night but fighting naps all day and crying a lot! I'm thinking/hoping it's growth spurt related. Isn't there a wonder week around five weeks? I know there is an 8-9 week wonder week and my baby would be 8 and 1/2 weeks if he was born on his due date which is how to calculate wonder weeks.

  • Period of purple crying!! (They stressed this SO MUCH at the hospital. Gave us multiple pamphlets, made us watch a movie, and even had a little "quiz.") I don't have any true advice for you though. Hope he gets through!
  • From 4 1-2 to 5 1/2 weeks is a leap/wonder week. I had an awful 3 day run with my little one of identical behavior, except when I read they said you still have breast milk, but the baby will pull off the breast and cry like you don't! That made me feel better, but of course I had tried a bottle before I knew. He's doing a lot better now. Good luck, I hope his phase ends soon.
  • My daughter went through a phase of crying bloody murder every night for a good few hours. It got to the point where you dreaded the night because you knew what was coming but for the past 5 nights she's like a different baby if she's cries it's not for very long and she's been asleep by 9:30 every night and slept for at least 5/6 hours before she wakes for a feed
  • He may have hit the 6 week growth spurt a little early.  Hang in there!  It's only like this for a few days and then he'll sleep like a little angel.
  • We just got over this same thing. I have no advice except to keep trying to calm LO best as you can. It will pass!
  • Wonder week/ growth spurt. The first double dose happens around that time. Mine got better almost as soon as she hit the 6 weeks mark. Afterwards you can look forward to a baby who is more (happily) awake and will hopefully sleep for longer 5+ hour stretches at night.

  • We went through this at 5 1/2 weeks. Don't get discouraged about "not having milk". Baby nursing is signaling your body to make more milk!
  • @Moreen20 Weeks 5 and 6 made me regret having a child. I'm not kidding. It was awful. I thought I had this terror of a child and kept thinking "what have I done?"

It passed. And I've apologized to her profusely for thinking those things!

Hang in there. Expect misery for the next week or two and you'll be fine.

But first maybe call doc and rule out medical cause?
  • What is wonder week? I have noticed my LO doing all of these things too. Very glad to see its normal and will pass
  • Go buy the DVD "the happiest baby on the block". It changed my life! It has a lot of the techniques that show you how to turn on the "calming reflex". My baby is 7 weeks and has been screaming for about a week and a half from 5-8pm. He instantly stopped tonight after we tried the techniques and has been napping or awake (and happy) for the last few hours.

It's basically a mental growth spurt. When LOs are learning new skills, they become almost overwhelmed with everything they are learning. This makes them cranky and pretty clingy. But the upside is, they come out with a new skill (the first being social smiles... which is pretty rewarding after a trying week!) You can get some info if you google. I bought the app for 2$ and it's a nice reference. So far the first 2 "leaps" have been spot on for my little guy.
  • Thanks for all the advice. I don't like to pass time by with my DS but I could do without his nonstop fussiness. I need to watch my Happiest Baby on the Block.
  • Agree! It's a wonder week! I also free with "happiest" baby! Hope it gets better soon
