Hand sucking

So my lo, 8 weeks, just started sucking on her hands... I guess it will progress to thumb sucking but it's so weird. I know she's not possibly hungry right now. Just wants to suck but it makes the cues so confusing other times. Anyway. It's so awkward. She looks like she's making out with her hands. Too funny. Anyone else go through this phase yet?

Re: Hand sucking

  • I noticed the hand sucking about a week ago and my son is 8 weeks. I'm absolutely encouraging it because he's so dependent on his pacifier to sleep that when he's in his crib and it pops out he loses his mind!

  • Yes, he started this last week. It's not all the time, but it is funny to hear little sucking noises and see him doing this. Lol

  • If you read what's happening weekly on the information that the bump leaves you would have seen that this is normal so don't worry. My son has been doing this since birth, it's comforting for them
  • DD does not take a paci. She uses this to smooth herself. I think it may progress to thumb sucking eventually but I'm hoping it doesn't. It is a sign she is sleep for us. I can put her down awake and she will suck on her hand and put herself to sleep.
  • Yep, I have a hand sucker too. He doesn't love his binky (only sometimes) and much prefers his hand.
  • I am hoping it leads to thumb sucking. DD refuses a pacifier. I need her to figure out how to self soothe for my sanity.
  • Yeah the good thing is that it avoids the screaming with the pacifier falling out of her mouth. Totally missed it on the bump weekly. It's so funny she sounds like such a sloppy kisser, smacking her lips lol. Can't wait to blackmail her with that info lol

  • My little guy just turned 10 weeks and has been sucking on his hands for about a week. It makes me laugh because he seems to enjoy it so much ... he does it every single diaper change and sometimes takes a break from nursing to shove his hand in his mouth.
  • Here too at 7 weeks. My other two suck their thumbs (at bedtime still for my 6.5 year old) so I'm not surprised.

Same here... My LO has done it since birth and has started doing it more frequently... Especially in her carseat
  • My little one has done it since birth
  • My son actually came out with a scab on his hand from sucking on it in utero! We thought it was a birth mark at first but the doctor said it happens sometimes. He was also 10 days late and his sucking reflex was very well developed, maybe that was partly why!
  • Mine has been sucking on his hands since birth. He is doing it more often now and it is definitely self soothing. It's adorable

  • My little guy also sucks his hand. He has found his thumb once and sucked it. I'm ok with it for now because it's self soothing, but I'm hoping he will learn to take a pacifier. He doesn't care for it right now.

  • My daughter is 9 weeks and started about a week or so ago. Right on target for 'finding her hands' - it's so cute to see! I just wonder sometimes is she hungry?
