W H A T ????

Some of your babies are sleeping 5-6 hours?!?!?! My 6 week old barely makes it 3 hours. He's great about eating, being changed, and going back to sleep but how in the world are you getting your LOs to go longer? Is this just because all babies are different or am I doing something wrong? Please share!

Re: W H A T ????

  • Don't worry. My 9.5 week old just started sleeping longer stretches this week and even then it's a crapshoot. Sometimes I get 5, sometimes 2 1/2.

  • My now 8 weeks baby has slept 8 hour stretches since 4 and a half weeks (sorry!) She cluster feedd at night then when she gets up. I think all babies are different hun. I keep saying to my husband, I bet if we had another child in the future it wouldn't be that easy xxx
  • All babies are different. Dd1 and dd2 were great sleepers. This LO is not at all. At 10 weeks I am thrilled if I get a three hour chunk of sleep at night. DD1 was sleeping 8-10 hours a night at 11 weeks.
  • I had the same reaction to some of the weight gains. My lo had some latch problems and is just getting to a pound over birth weight now at 8 weeks and others have gained 6 lbs!! Anywho. My lo is random but will sleep like 6 hours. Car rides help lol or cluster feeding. Other times there's no sleep Inbetween!

My 8w daughter sleeps a 5-6 hour stretch (6-7h b/w feeds) about 3-4 nights a week. For now, I'm still waking to pump a bit to keep up supply, in case she regresses.

I believe it's just all babies are different. My son sleeps 6 hours but he doesn't go down until 2:30 am. I have no idea how other people get their babies to sleep at 8-9 pm. I also feel like he's growing/gaining way too fast. To read others saying their babies have gained whatever amount of weight since birth is always less then him. At 9 weeks hes 15 lbs and has gained over 8.5 lbs since birth. He is a monster
  • I think it's just different for everyone. My LO sleeps 4 hour stretches typically but has gone as long as 8. All we do is feed her and put her to sleep. Nothing special.
  • Our LO will sleep 10 hours a night. Sometimes straight through and sometimes he will wake up once around 3:00 for a bottle then go back to bed. He is exclusively FF, so we found that making his last bottle of the day (between 8 and 9) a half ounce or ounce more Helps to get longer stretches of sleep.

    Good luck!
  • My 9 weeker sleeps 9 hours a night and I don't have to do anything. His bedtime routine is literally just his usual eat, play, sleep, sometimes a bath, and between 8 and 10 he'll just stay asleep the next 9 hours. No sleep associations or anything...we just turn the lights off at 8.

He is a supremely easy baby, and my heart goes out to all of you.
  • Sleeping 9-10 hours straight through the night?! Wow. Lucky ladies! 5 hour stretch, that's the very longest I'll get and that's not every night. After his first feeding he wakes every 2 hours to nurse. Broken up sleep sucks.
  • My LO is almost 10 weeks and 2-3 hour stretches are the norm, but occasionally I get 4 or 5 hours. Friday night he slept 8 for the first time, then last night he was up every 2 hours. ; (
  • My LO is 10 weeks and up until last week he slept in 2-3 hour chunks at night and got up for the day at 3:30am. Only a few 5-10 minute catnaps during the day. It was pretty brutal! He still doesn't nap during the day but the last week he started sleeping longer stretches and last night he slept from 9pm to 5am!! He is huge. He was 7lbs 9 oz at his lowest and he's about 15 lbs now! He eats a lot before going down for the night (nurses plus 6-10 oz) so I think that helped him sleep through. I on the other hand set my alarm for every 2 hours to pump (supply issues)...

  • All babies are different.  My first woke every 2 hours until about 5 months, my second only wakes 1 or 2 times from 7:30-7:30 am.  Same parents, same methods but completely different sleepers.
  • @caityrose I sent you a private message. And yes in response to the question all babies are different :-)

My LO is 10 weeks and we're in the same boat. I usually get 4 or 5 hours after I put him down for the night but after he wakes up that first time I might get another 4 hours or he might be back up in an hour and a half.

  • My lo is 8 weeks and it's still pretty random. I will admit we dont have a bedtime routine, but being flexible just works better for us. I do aim to get lo down for the night around 10:30, but sometimes he just needs to go to sleep earlier! We are pretty consistent at 3 hour stretches, with an occasional 4 or 5 hours mixed in. I consider myself lucky that he goes back to sleep pretty easily, and we aren't up for long.

I would love for some longer stretches, but to me, it's just not worth the stress of trying to implement a bunch of different techniques to try and get it. I feed on demand with the idea of trying to get an extra feed or 2 in during the evening. Also, lo sleeps in a rock n play because it works best right now. Around our 5 am wakeup, he usually has a little harder time going back to sleep, so I will put him in bed with me to get another stretch before we get up.
  • Try starting a routine! The earlier you get them down the longer stretch you will get. We do a bath at 6:30, baby massage, rocking and story time, nursing and then bed by 7:30. My LO is 7 weeks but started 5 hour stretches a little over a week ago.

Ok very happy with my sons routine! He's a slow gainer so I'm happy he still wakes at night. We turn the lights out at 8:30 when big brother goes to bed. LO wakes usually one more time before I go to bed and then he sleeps next to me so we feed around 10:30 or midnight when I lay down. Then he sleeps consistently until 4:30am! Around 7 the house gets bright and interesting again so we spend some time awake between 7-9 and then the long daytime naps begin! My only struggle is getting him to take enough milk through the 24 hour time period whenever he is awake! He's little, and sleepy and a lazy eater so we've just begun a slightly complicated routine of pumping, breastfeeding and adding about 6-8 ounces of formula until he gets where he needs to be. I think he'll be measuring back on track tomorrow at his appointment :)
  • All babies are different :) My first was occasionally doing a 5h stretch at 8mo, this baby was less than a week when she started 5-6h stretches. At 8 weeks I get a 5-6h stretch, followed by a 2-4h stretch. Both EBF, but this baby is more content and gaining faster. I bedshare now, I found it so much easier to go with what the baby wants than trying a ton of different techniques-only to be derailed by the next milestone.

  • My little guy sleeps well. He has since he was a week old. He has never slept less than 31/2 hours at a stretch. He still sleeps a ton during the day and goes at least 6 hours at night but usually 7 hours. He's gone longer but we don't have a routine at all. He sleeps with me at night. I've tried putting him in his crib and he sleeps maybe 20 minutes. Daytime naps he will stay down an hour or so without me. We are still trying to figure it all out.

  • All babies are different. This is my first but I have my 4 sisters are all 10-21 years younger than me. I've basically seen it all with them. Yet I've never met a LO like mine. At 8 weeks he likes his sleep mostly at night. I don't follow a daytime routine but i started a nighttime one 5 days ago. 5:00 feed, play/ nap (sometimes he just wants to nap, usually he's doing floor time with daddy while I make dinner or he just naps) 7:30 bath time 8:00 feed, then bed by 8:30. Since we started this he went from waking up between 2 and 3:30 to waking up at 5:30. He eats then sleeps until about 8:30.
  • my 8 week old sleeps about 10 hours a night! the last few nights she has wanted a dream feed around midnight; but mostly she's been sleeping straight thro from 9-7. her first couple weeks it was awful getting her to sleep, but once we got her into a routine she's been a great sleeper. I put her in her pjs and swaddle sack around 8:30, nurse her in my bed til she gets sleepy (often I sing to her or tell her a story while she nurses), then I lay her in her sidecar cosleeper, fasten her swaddle and turn on this lullaby YouTube video that she loves. I stay in bed until I can tell she's really out, then I turn off the video and go watch tv or whatever with hubby. I leave the bedside lamp on til I go to bed, she seems to find it comforting and she cries if I leave her alone in the dark.

I wish my LO went out for the night and slept 8hrs. His longest sleep starts at 4am or 5am til about 930am or 10am. However, my day starts at 730a, so at 8 weeks, 2 to 3 hrs stretch is what I get.

  • Ugh! My baby was giving us 3 hour stretches, then four, then five, then one glorious 6.5 hour stretch. I thought he was finally starting to sleep through the night but he's regressed somehow and suddenly went back to just three hours and then tonight only 2 hours 45 minutes. I'm so sad! It seemed like we were making such great progress and now it's constant waking again.
  • I posted above...

My daughter (8w) WAS sleeping 6-7 hours, but tonight woke up after 5. Then rustled around on and off for the next two hours, ate and rustled around more in her crib. She's now swaddled, on her back and in bed with me while DH sleeps on the couch. ;)

Point being? She regresses ALL the time and I've got to roll with it. I do think she just wants her momma and I'm ok with that!
