baby dropping

I think baby boy dropped because there is soo much pressure on everything down there but I'm only 33 weeks and 2 days today and I started feeling it at 32 weeks 4 days has anyone else dropped this early and should I tell my ob at my apointment on wednesday?

Re: baby dropping

  • I dropped around 31 weeks and this is my first. The doctor has done US and didn't seem concerned whatsoever so I'm guessing that it isn't a big deal.

  • Everyone that sees me says I've dropped. I'm 33 weeks today. Everything feels very low.
  • Your OB can determine your baby's station during a manual pelvic exam if you just ask. I was at -3 for a few weeks and now am -1 at 36 weeks. Just ask your doctor to check since most don't start doing routine pelvic exams until 35-36 weeks unless they have another reason to check you.
  • I have yet to drop at 36.4

Question, nor to hijack the thread, but do people's health care providers do a down there exam every week after 36 weeks? My midwives don't but said they would if I want them too. Wasn't sure if this was the norm
  • My doctor does after 36 weeks
  • Pretty sure I dropped btwn 32-34w b/c all of a sudden I can eat & drink again without feeling overfull or getting nasty heartburn. Plus the pressure on my bladder doubled.

@Taylovesbrad my ob practice does a check every week after 36, but I've heard some say it's not necessary. I also don't think I have the best practice in the world, if that tells you anything.
  • Baby dropping isn't really supposed to be an indication of imminent labor so I wouldn't worry.
  • 34 weeks, my baby has dropped. My OB said the pressure is normal and she encourages me to use this as my "baseline" for when labor IS imminent because it will increase
    .
  • I think that timing is pretty typical from what I've read. But I don't think mines dropped yet (34.5 weeks right now). And yes, my OB does do full exams starting at 35 weeks. Have my first one next week!
  • I think twin1 has dropped for me. There is so much pressure down there that it is very uncomfortable to walk. My nst monitor for her is placed just above my pubic bone.
  • My OB does a pelvic starting at 36 weeks for a normal pregnancy every week to check for dilation, effacement, station, and any problems. They of course will always do one when asked in office sooner for a concern of if you're a high risk patient.
I haven't escaped a weekly pelvic exam since about week 30 due to PTL and 10+ trips to L&D for this, oligohydraminos, nearing IUGR etc (all being sent down from regular doctors appts after an NST/bedside US/exam....not calling in to L&D and wanting to be checked!!!)
From what I've gathered by 36 weeks it's normal to be checked at your weekly appointments.
  • I'm 34 weeks and baby just dropped. Yep, little more pressure down low now.
  • Generally speaking, first time moms "drop" four to five weeks before baby is due and second time and up tend to drop right before labor. I don't fit that at all - never ever dropped with baby number 1. #2 and now #3 I started dropping between 33 and 34 weeks. #2 I didn't feel that intense "oh my god this kid is going to just fall out of my vagina" pressure until 37 weeks. I noticed that same "there's a head between my legs" feeling two days ago at 35+ 2 with this pregnancy.

As pp have said, most practices start weekly checks at the 36 week mark. Some just offer it and make it clear you have the choice if you want it or not, some just say they do it once a week from here on out and that's that. Just keep in mind unless you have a health concern they are generally not needed. Also if you have them remember that your dilation, station and effacement prior to actual labor are just numbers (and are important if you are planning an induction within a few days but otherwise do not indicate labor one way or the other) and not to get your hopes up (or your soul crushed) if you are dilating (or not) prior to labor. I just had a friend who walked around for two weeks at 4.5 cm and 70% effaced before having her baby (and it drove her nuts knowing she was so "open and ready" but not in labor yet).
  • I'm 35 weeks and haven't dropped but baby has stayed head down the last couple of visits, so no concern.
My OB does cervical exams starting at 36 weeks, I was also told by her that those exams are no indication of labor because I can dilated and partially effaced and still go beyond my due date. I have a growth/fluid check at my 36 appointment and they check the cervix via ultrasound at that point as well. I won't be having manual cervical exams unless my OB sees it necessary as I have had a complicated free pregnancy so far. She is in agreement with this and told me they are usually more discomfort than they are worth, unless there are issues with the pregnancy of course.
If this is a concern for anyone just have a direct talk with your provider and see what their opinion is, especially if you are uncomfortable with cervical exams for any reason.
  • I got cervical checks from 36 weeks onward with DD. They were not uncomfortable for me and I liked knowing numbers even if they don't "mean anything." I'll do the same this time.

  • I'm almost 37 weeks and I don't feel like she's dropped, I get lightening crotch and feel her low intermittently but otherwise she's kicking my ribs and making it impossible to breathe still.
I go to a midwife practice within a university hospital, they won't do any cervical checks until I'm in labor unless I request one. Checks apparently don't give much info and can increase your risk of infection. This was the same guideline used with DD.
  • My doctor said she'd do a physical exam at 36 weeks generally but if I didn't want it that was ok too. She said they can do them weekly after but it's optional. Since I'm 38 years old she said I'm in that grey zone of needing extra monitoring (plus have mild GD) so we are going to start doing weekly NSTs soon.
