C-section advice for new mom?

I'm 37 weeks on Sunday & Monday we'll find out if a c-section is needed since our little girl is breech. I'm a first time mom so I'm a little anxious, mostly about recovery. Any advice for pre-delivery & post would be great! Also, they keep telling us our baby is chunky, and already 7lbs...how accurate is that? ? Thank you! !

  • @chelmomma hit it on the nose!!^^ I had a planned c section on the 30th, due to baby being breech as well, he was 10 days early and 8lbs 9oz!!!! I was so scared, but the surgery itself was easy peasy!! The dr's were great at communicating with me and I was very comfortable. Now for the recovery, I've had it worse because I had my tubes done and there were other complications with my abdominal wall when they were sewing me back up (it gets pretty weak after having 3 babies over 8lbs
  • I had an emergency c section at 35+4 bc baby was breech and my fluid levels were very low. It was so much easier compared to pregnancy as mentioned above! Getting out of bed to walk for the first time was a little brutal but for the most part I've felt great! I took the pain medication sparingly and completely stopped taking it a week postpartum.

Agree with above and be sure to stock up on high cut undies and pants. You'll be so glad you did! Also remember to let people do as much as possible for you. We are in a 2 story house and I was constantly wanting to go up and down all day until I noticed how sore I was getting. Take it easy, do some light walking several times a day and enjoy your new baby!

Also they said my LO would be 5 lbs 2 oz and she was born at 5lbs 7oz. Pretty accurate in my case.

Have you tried posting this in the c section board? Those women are amazing! They definitely helped ease my fears.
  • Just had a c section last Wednesday. I had no idea what to expect and was extremely scared. Here's my birth story:

My doctor scheduled my c section for Wednesday at 4. I went to the hospital, registered, went to labor and delivery, got my room, and then got in my gown. Immediately a nurse came in and began to prep me. They gave me an IV and went through a ton of medical history questions and then filled me in on what was going to happen. The anesthesiologist came in and told me the procedure he was going to do. About an hour later they came in and wheeled me to the OR. I was scared already but seeing all the surgical instruments added to it. They got me on a table and had me lean over a pillow. The doctor gave me a numbing agent in my spine that felt like a bee sting. That was the worst thing about the whole process. Once he gave me that he inserted the epidural and they laid me flat on the table. They inserted a catheter and apart from tugs I didn't feel a thing. My OB came in and they got started. My advice is to close your eyes and think about breathing. It isn't painful, but it is traumatic. Think about your baby and think about holding him/her and listening to the first cry. In about 20 min the whole thing was over. Again, you dont feel anything but slight pressure and tugging. My husband was with me the whole time and he checked on the baby while they stitched me up. The doctors talked to me and answered every question. I went back to my recovery room and waited while they did the work up on my son and my husband talked to me and soothed me. I had the shakes afterwards. This was the second bad thing about the whole ordeal. Its from the epidural and of course trauma your body went through. Once I held my baby it went away. After recovery I went to my room and nursed. Nurses came in and cleaned me periodically, checking my vitals, giving me ice chips, etc. My husband couldn't stay the night with me so this made things difficult. I recommend having someone stay with you if your baby stays in your room. The next morning they removed my catheter, helped me out of bed and helped me to the bathroom where I showered. They will give you 6 hours to pee. If you dont they put you back on the catheter. Your bladder may still be affected by the epidural. Luckily I peed the required amount right then and took a shower. They allow you to walk and move. DO IT. It hurts but breathe through the pain. Dont try to bend over or walk to fast. Just take your time and try to get up every thirty minutes even if its just to walk to the bathroom. When you hold your baby use a pillow to support your arms and  the majority of his weight. Wear loose hi cut underwear. Drink tons of water. And remember that you just had major surgery. Accept help and try to sleep as much as possible.
I'm on day 4 post c section and it has been tough. I was released from the hospital Friday and yesterday was my worst day. Make yourself a spot in your house where everything you want and baby needs is accessible and plan to stay there. Use pillows to prop yourself up. It really isn't so bad and though it may not be ideal, your baby got here safe and sound! You got this!
  • So glad I found this post! I just scheduled a csection for my first baby! He is 2 days past his due date, but he is measuring big (9lbs and in the 97%). Of course I'm nervous of the risks, but it seems to be the safest way to go! I love hearing from you ladies that it's not as bad as it seems! It makes me feel better about my decision! Hopefully I'll hear back tomorrow from the doctor for the day and time that I will go in!! Again thank you and send prayers! Thinking of you and your sweet babies!!
  • Had my second csection a little over a week ago and both I got by with just motrin no other pain meds. I think the key to a quick recovery is movement. Get up and move as soon as you can you will be stiff but it gets better. High rise underwear and loose pants are a must!
