Steroid injections

I was diagnosed with preeclampsia yesterday and told I would need two steroid shots for baby boys lung development incase he has to come before 35 weeks. I don't have an issue with needles or shots really, but I just kind of wanted to mentally prepare myself. How are the shots and are there any side effects? I've read it can decrease baby's movement, that's what makes me most nervous.

Re: Steroid injections

  • I've had steroid shots for allergies and asthma issues. They gave mine in my upper glute, I only bruised once (make sure not to tense your muscle in anticipation). I really don't like needles and it really isn't as bad as I always think it will be. Never had one during pregnancy so I don't know about the specific side effects you mention but they should monitor you or give you a clear understanding of what to expect from baby if changes are expected.

  • I was admitted at 31 weeks with my twins and given steroid injections for three days and they were born at 32 weeks. I really had no side effects other than the spot where I got the shot being really sore. I got mine in my hip all three times. It does hurt like hell but like any other shot, only lasts a second. I can say it really helped my girls. Born at 32w1d, they both came out screaming and never needed any oxygen at all. The shots did their job and the girls still moved quite a bit after all three! Good luck :)
  • I got the 2 steroid injections at 32 weeks because of increased blood pressure. They are done in the hip area. They are a little painful because it is a large amount of fluid in each injection. This is why it can't be done in your arm. As for side effects you may feel warmer (hot flashes) for a couple days and it can increase your blood sugar levels (so if diabetic will usually monitor closer). Other than a little soreness (which I will say was a lot less painful then the tDaP). I did not have any decrease in fetal movement. And I am now 35 weeks and still have not delivered. Good thing is I got the steroids in case and I am also glad that I have made it this far. It is what is best for baby. Hope this alleviates some of your concern.
  • If you haven't, make sure you discuss you questions with your doctor. But keep in mind they do much more good than harm.
Hoping you have a safe delivery and can keep baby in as long as possible.
  • Just had them the other day. I also have preeclampsia and I'm 34wks. The steroids were given in the thigh, 24hrs apart. No big deal. Usual poke, didn't have any side effects at all.
  • I received two last week and got one in each butt cheek 24 hours apart. No side effects at all but it did sting while they were actually injecting.
