Baby won't nap

LO is 9 weeks old and he won't nap during the day. Not even for a few minutes! He fights his sleep then always gets overtired and then he cries and fusses all day long and it's driving me crazy. I've tried rocking him, nursing him, swaddling him, putting him on my chest, taking him out for a drive, nothing works. As soon as he stops feeling movement he starts to cry. Why could he be having such a hard time? Last week I posted about our wacky pediatrician and I still haven't found a new one to take him to. I'm so frustrated that I raised my voice at him and now I feel really bad. I'm so stressed out. I'm always so very patient but today I just lost it.

Re: Baby won't nap

  • 8-9 weeks is a wonder week...pretty big stuff going on to make it harder for babies to sleep easily. Hopefully it will pass :)

  • I don't know if you tried this or how your little one responds to bath time, but whenever I've tried everything and my DD is still fighting sleep I give her a bath. It relaxes her. And after I give her a little more milk, and almost always she falls asleep within 10 minutes. It's worth a try if he enjoys bath time.
  • DD is like this in the afternoon. Honestly I let her sleep on my and devote some quality time to Netflicks. In the mornings using a nap time routine works, but she needs an extra blanket and after she's asleep I need to be out of the room or she will fuss to be picked up when she wakes up and sees me.
  • All I can suggest is going into a dark, dark room (like a closet) and seeing if that helps. I noticed that my DD is really struggling to sleep if the room is too light. Her eyes just want to focus on everything now that she can see much further.

  • He is overtired, overtired babies not only have trouble falling asleep they have trouble staying asleep.  You wrote that he wakes as soon as you stop moving, I know that you are exhausted and want to have a few minutes to yourself but you need to break the cycle.  Don't stop moving, keep driving, rocking, bouncing etc. whatever you need to do to get him to take a good nap or two. Most likely he will continue this cycle until he gets some good restorative, deep sleep.

This! I do the same. Bath and a lotion massage, a little milk, works like a charm

Yes he is overtired and today he had his 2 month shots (unfortunately still had to see the wacky ped) so he is actually napping BUT with fever. :( My goodness lol. But I'll try rocking him even longer to put him into a deeper sleep. Maybe take him on a long walk in his stroller. And a warm bath does sound very helpful. Hopefully this does have something to do with the wonder week (I hadn't even thought about that possibility) and it'll pass soon, thank you ladies!
  • Not sure if you baby wear, but when my little one is fighting her day time naps (which she does often) I put her in the Ergo and she will sleep for an hour or two, I just keep moving a majority of the time. She loves movement too. Hopefully it'll pass soon! Good luck, mama!
  • Do you have a swing? My son doesn't do daytime naps much at all, but he will stay quiet and eventualllllly falls asleep in it
