2nd Trimester

I need some helpful advice and not more wishy washy blither blather :)

I was needing some helpful advice or just some advice even if it isn't helpful lol. Let me explain, I am currently 26 weeks pregnant and approximately 9 weeks ago I ended up with a presumed Kidney Stone or a blockage and had to have a stent placed between my kidney and bladder. I had one replacement at 5 weeks and Thursday will be my second replacement. I will continue to have to have a replacement once a month or so until after Baby Joyce is delivered. If you haven't had a stent pray you never have one, I think getting bit by a rabid raccoon would be more pleasurable. I currently work at a daycare with 2 and 3 year olds. Needless to say, it takes a lot of work and energy. The stent becomes irritated with the more activity I do. My doctor recommended that I cut back hours at work because of the pain and irritation brought on by the stent. I have had two minor infections (think UTIs), have missed a few days of work because of the pain they caused, and have to take pain medication on a daily basis to function at my job. I asked my Urologist what other patients have done or what he would recommend and I got an unanswer. "Well, uh I don't know, everyone is different." Yes, I understand that but I would like more of a suggestion or conversation than that. OR I would just like to know what other ladies have done when facing medical issues and were recommended to reduce hours. :)

  • I suggest seeing a different urologist with that kind of answer. You're having a difficult time as it is, no need to make it more difficult with someone who is unprofessional. As a patient, you're entitled to know and understand your treatments. I hope things get better for you.

  • If you've been given medical advice to cut back, you should cut back. Can you get a doctor's note to show your employer/HR?

Ultimately as your pregnancy progresses, discomfort will get worse, and you'll be peeing a lot more as the baby grows bigger too. Ending up on enforced sick leave or being in constant pain won't help you or mental state towards your baby, but by cutting back now maybe it will allow you to continue working for longer and be able to give of your best whilst with the kids at daycare - which I'm sure is what you'd want to do?

    Sending hugs regardless.

    This.

You can ask to see a different Urologist that might be more helpful or you just cut back on your hours at work. I had to do that sporadically throughout my pregnancies and at the very end of both.

  • I would cut hours. The answer to this is truly individual. Its not "wishy-washy" to state that. Its the truth. You can ask for a second opinion from another doctor but the answer will be much the same. If it hurts to work your current load, reduce your hours so that the pain is less frequent and more manageable.

I had kidney stones that I passed by myself, but the other option available to me was a small procedure to break up the stone and take it out. I think you have to be twilight sedated, but you can get pregnancy safe ways to do that. Is there another option to remove or break up the stone so you can pass it on your own? Not gonna lie, its awful to pass the stone, but not sure what your situation is that requires stents.

  • I would cut your hours, or speak to your employer about possibly changing your role temporarily. I know at my son's daycare there are teaching assistants who do a lot of the classroom prep work. Perhaps you could pick that up for several of the classes and some one else could cover your kids? It's something that I think it's worth speaking to management about, depending on how flexible they are, they may be able to find a way to make it work for you.

  • One thing a patient needs to remember is that a Dr. works for you!  I cannot fathom what you are going thru.  And suggesting someone cut back on work without knowing their financial situation is easier said than done.  If it is possible, a second opinion is always a good idea if you feel your needs are not being met.  Take heed of Drs. that seem calloused or uncaring.  Best to you.
  • Yikes......that's a hard one, because if you're anything like me and my husband, we can't afford to cut back on work hours...have you looked into potential disability to help cover the loss of wages if you do cut back on hours? Sounds like maybe that might be your BEST option. But sometimes that's easier said than done. Also, I agree. Id personally find a different urologist.......or even try asking your OB what you can do to help alleviate the pain issue? Sorry to hear you're having to deal with this. Total bummer.
  • I have had chronic kidney stones ever since I had one shattered in my right kidney. I had a stent in place for about a month after to help the shards pass. I now produce stones on this side fairly regularly and was told that this may happen. Well since becoming pregnant I have stones on a weekly basis and it SUCKS!! I have a home remedy that I use that typically makes stone passing nearly painless. Sometimes extra large ones cause some discomfort still but it's much better than the alternative. This will sound like a croc but I urge anyone with stone issues to give it a shot before knocking it. I have a tablespoon on apple cider vinegar a day to help keep the stones away. And if I do start to get that familiar stone pain I drink a mix that is 1/8c normal olive oil and 1/8c lemon juice. By the next morning the stone passes without feeling it. Sometimes for bad ones I have to keep the oil mix up for a day or two but it goes in the end easily.
