Pumping sanitation question

When I pump for the overnight times, did I read correctly that you can rinse the pieces to the pump with cold water then put them in the fridge until the next use so you don't have to wash them in between? Wondering if I made that up!

Re: Pumping sanitation question

  • im not sure if I've heard that, but I find it easier to skip the washing at night and just have extra clean bottles and such so I don't have to get out of bed at all. :x
  • Loading the player...
  • I rinse them and then wash them the next morning. But maybe just get a medela wipe to clean in middle of the night?
  • Yep I've read multiple places you can just put the parts in the fridge for the next time you pump. When I was pumping around the clock I would wipe parts with medela wipes the first night pump then toss in fridge after the second pump, then after third pump (in the morning) I washed everything.
  • When I was pumping around the clock that's what my lactation consultant told me to do at night!
  • I've heard this too but it's never been explained to me. Why the fridge?

Because breastmilk is similar to cows milk in that it can be refrigerated for several days before souring.

Cows milk can last longer as it gets pasteurized/homogenized before being sold in stores.

  • Yep, the lc told me I could rinse and refrisgerate my parts and just wash them every 24 hours. It was so nice at 3 am not to have to go downstairs and wash them.
  • When I was up more than once in the night, I just rinsed and left the parts to dry (not in the fridge). Then washed them in the morning and after all daytime pumps. Seems to work fine, tho I probably wouldn't leave them in a really hot room.
  • U don't have to rinse them at all. Once u finish pump store it another container and pop it in the fridge. It prevents the milk from going off. If u rinse it with water without drying, u may cause the leftover water to mix with your milk. I personally just pop it in as soon as I'm done and wash and sterilise it every night and leave it to dry. By the morning I'm good to go again.

So what you're saying is that putting unwashed parts in the fridge prevents any milk residue from souring. Do I have that right?

Yes, but just for short time.
