Umbilical Cord Blood Bank

has anyone considered the umbilical cord blood bank? Im almost at 20weeks and i am not sure about it. Ive done some research, but i want to get some personal opinions about it.

I know it contains some stem cells that if the baby ever needs if, i can take it from the bank because its a 100% match.

This is my first baby, and i dont have anyone around me to ask around, this is the first baby on both sides of the family.

Thank you

  • Ask your doctor about it. My doc gave us a very detailed explanation of the pros and cons. The only real con is the price; it's very expensive! She described it as a very expensive insurance plan. And you don't even know if the cord blood research will help if you do have an issue. We decided not to do it because the finances are too much for us.

  • We've pretty much decided not to do it because of the cost as well.  There's also a very small likelihood that your baby will ever need it
  • We have done it and will again. We used a local agency that we got to talk to in person, on the phone ect. Is 1200 one time fee and $125 storage fee annually. We felt it was worth it for the benefits it would provide. The company we used is owned by a nurse and her husband who is a physicals assistant. They gave us lots of ways the cord blood cOuld be used and if the blood collected arrives at the lab and isn't usable, u don't pay anything.
  • We're not going to store. I did consider donating, but my OB isn't convinced it is beneficial (unless you have a family history) and there is still so much research that needs to be done before we know how useful saving cord blood really is.
Also, I wanted to do delayed cord clamping, which you can't do if you store or donate the blood.
  • We didn't with our son and won't be doing it this time either. If circumstances allow we will be doing delayed cord clamping. I'd rather my baby get all of the blood now when I know it will benefit them than store it away just incase it is needed in the future.
  • DH and I did not for the same reason as PP- it's pricey, and both my OB and our pediatrician said that the likelihood that baby would ever need it, and that doctors would have the technology to use it in the future are very slim. We were told that people for whom it is most beneficial are parents with surrogates and adoptive parents, where immediate family is not easily accessible for things like marrow, blood transfusions, failed organs, etc. But that most diseases that cord blood can be used to help/treat can be helped/treated by other donations.
  • ainverso I private messaged you a bit ago. I would love to hear about the company you used or other companies you would recommend looking in to. We're still undecided, but I really want to do some more research into actually companies that do this. Without any recommendations, there are just too many companies & I don't want to be scammed.
  • We are not doing it. My sister works in the medical ICU as a nurse at A big children's hospital and she said they have never used cord blood in any of their treatments.
  • I won't be doing cord blood banking as I will be strongly advocating for delayed cord clamping. They have recently deveoped a system in Alberta where the baby can be resuscitated at the bedside while remaining connected to the cord, which would be the only scenario where you would absolutely need to cut it right away. There was a really good discussion of delayed cord clamping in July here:

    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
    Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • Such a cool technology but we're not planning on doing it.  Too pricey for us and since we don't have any medical history that would make a more convincing argument for it we would rather spend that money extending my maternity leave.
  • I'm not doing it because I want to do delayed clamping. I'm interested in the technology though - it's a great idea, but still a little new for me.
