Positive for Downs - Cell Free DNA Blood Test (Qnatal)

Im 44 and I had this test completed and it came back positive for Downs. Was advised this test is 99% accurate and a false positive is very unlikely. I went ahead and did a CVS to get a final result and waiting on results, but I'm devastated. Has anyone else gone through this?

  • No experience but I am very sorry you are having to go through this.

  • Me, too. Praying.
  • Lots of women on the board receive "positive" tests...it's a ratio/odds thing, isn't it? But have negative amnio. Search the boards, I've only read a handful of posts where an abnormality is confirmed. Still praying!

In the case of the quad screen [Inhibin A, Alpha Fetoprotein, HCG, and Estriol] you are correct that these values calculate risk of certain conditions but can also be elevated or decreased for other reasons.  In contrast, the OP had free cell DNA testing so although there can be false positives (and false negatives) they are actually looking for specific concerning DNA sequences (like trisomies or chromosomal deletions) in the placental DNA and the accuracy is much better.

I am sorry to hear you are going through this! A friend of mine has a 2 year old with DS and has a blog that you might find helpful to read: themaidenmetallurgist.com
She is very upfront about the joys and challenges she faces each day and has some great information on her page.
  • @sherri&david praying for you.. Any update?
