Eating healthy with morning sickness issues!

Is anyone else having a hard time eating healthy, fresh food with morning sickness? All I can really stomach is bland carbs :/ anytime I go to eat something all I can think about is if it's something I want to throw up at work. (Fruit = throwing up the consistency of apple sauce at work = eww no). Prior to pregnancy I was pretty healthy too and right now it's mostly bread and crackers! What are you eating that's agreeing with you?!

Re: Eating healthy with morning sickness issues!

  • Carbs! The only fruits I can handle right now are bananas and apples. I had an applesauce pouch and it turned my stomach. Basically any veggie makes me want to vomit. So, there's that. Try not to stress. You'll start eating "normally" once second tri starts and you're feeling like your old self :)

  • I would love to figure that out !! It's terrible ! I too used to eat healthy ... And all I can get down is oatmeal and crackers ... Crazy :( I can't wait until I can eat normal again and healthy . I'm nervous about gaining too much weight but I am just going to roll with it for now
  • Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain right now. I mean yes, if it's a pound a week, be concerned! But I've always thought the name of the game for the first tri is just to survive it if you're feeling miserable ;) also, for frame of reference, I gained 32 lbs with both my pregnancies, so I'm not all crazy about going nuts with food, or freaking out about it, either.
  • I'm 9 weeks tomorrow and in the past 2 days I've managed to finally eat some fruits and veggies. I am proud for having ate a banana, a mouthful of turnip greens, two mouthfuls of black eyed peas, and a small salad at dinner. Today I ate some strawberries and some peas. These are officially the first fruits/veggies I've had.

  • I do whole wheat toast for breakfast with slices of avocado on top. It's perfect for my nausea.

  • Yeap in the same boat. Fries and bread are about the only things I can eat right now. And all I want to do is give healthy food to baby but it makes me want to upchuck. :(
  • Multigrain crackers with a little hummus. I tell myself it's healthier because I'm at least getting more fiber that way.

  • Banana and apples are all I can stomach fruit wise unless it's a juice. There is a great juice place near me that does fun juices and I try to get that when I can (today's was kale, blueberry, apple and something else)..,they throw ginger in too sometimes, which helps the nausea
  • I'm in the same boat! I was the healthiest eater and now it's all bagels and pasta and yuck! It's literally like I'm trying to survive and eat whatever will stay in! It's awful and I feel like I'm getting no nutrients.
  • Yes yes yes! Pre morning sickness days I stuck with a paleo diet. And that diet has been long gone since week 5 :(. I'm 9W3D and I can stomach some veggies but when my MS kicks in the only thing that makes me feel better are carbs. I'm so glad I'm not the only person feeling like this.
  • You just gotta give your body what it can handle right now. First tri doesn't last forever, and right now if you can choke down some water and prenatals with your crackers and fries, you'll be OK. I don't recommend trying to force yourself to eat things that are unappetizing. I tried that with my first pregnancy and the end result was that I couldn't go near a sweet potato for a year because I associated them so strongly with nausea -- just the smell of one could put me off all food, long after I'd tried to force them down at the peak of my nausea. Someone suggested on another thread to have healthy foods easily accessible in case you have a moment when you're feeling good and able to eat them, and that's a really good idea. The other day I had a 20-minute window when I felt great, and I snuck in a kale salad before the nausea came back. Which I felt was a good balance to the day before, when all I'd eaten was popsicles.

  • I'm having a hard time getting enough protein.

I have been eating so many Clementine's and they actually seem to help with my nausea!

  • My doctor's new recommendation is something with protein before bed and then dry toast or crackers first thing in the morning. Of course, I have been living on just Gatorade for a few weeks now. Anytime you're stomach sick, the BRAT diet is a safe bet... bananas, rice, apples, toast. Right now, it's more about survival than staying perfectly balanced.
  • Anyone who has seen my "palate of a 6 year old" thread knows my answer to the question. :)

@NicknShan - putting avocado on toast sounds fabulous. Gonna do that when I get home tonight.

  • I haven't been able to stomach protein either.  Meat make be puke, Cheese make me puke, protein bars make me puke.  Beans don't seem remotely appetizing.  My grandfather got through chemotherapy nausea by sipping boost so that's been where I have been getting a lot of my protein even though the taste leave some to be desired.
