Name thoughts- too weird?

Hi ladies,

DH and I have struggled like crazy trying to figure out a boy name that we both like.  We finally found a few, and wanted to get your feedback:

Huxley (our current top choice)
Emerson
Maddox
Hudson

Thoughts?  We don't want something totally weird, so we like that it's pretty obvious how to pronounce all of these.  We also didn't want (or at least DH didn't' want...) something super popular.

Thanks!

Re: Name thoughts- too weird?

  • I loveee emerson! Hudson has become popular I know a few babies named that but regardless its a nice name. Ive never heard of Huxley but I wouldnt say its weird same with Maddox. But Emerson is my fav of the four

  • I also prefer Emerson of the choices listed.
  • Emerson and Hudson are super cute! I know an adult Hudson and love the name. The other two are super weird lol.
  • I like Emerson and Hudson far more than the other two names.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Emerson is my vote!
  • I don't think any of them are super weird (but I live in Los Angeles, haha.)  In fact, I know a baby Maddox and a kid named Hudson who is about 10.  I would say I like Hudson the best, then Maddox, Emerson and Huxley.  I think Huxley is definitely the most out there name (but again, not crazily so.)  The only downside I can see with Emerson is that I feel like I've seen that popping up as a girl name here and there, but if that doesn't bother you, go for it!

I'd recommend testing each of them out by saying them aloud a lot and see which feels the best.

  • I don't like Huxley. I like the others.
  • Emerson and Hudson are by far my favorite. I like that they make good kid and adult names. Both will sound great on a resume when they grow up too. Huxley sounds made up to me.
  • I like traditional names so none are really my style. But between all of them, I'd go Hudson.
  • I do not like huxley. But I like Hudson the most
  • Huxley reminds me of the Cosby Show.

    The Huxtables.
    N (2004)A (2007), N (2010), and L (due 1/2016)
  • I vote Emerson.
  • @leap_frog YES! I thought the same thing!!
  • Hudson and Maddox are more popular I think.
Huxley also made me think of the Cosbys, and while it's not one I would choose, it sounds fun and new.

  • We're naming our son Maddox, so obliviously that is my favorite. I would say Hudson is a close second. I really like Emerson as well, but we strayed away from that for the same reason pp pointed out, that name is getting increasingly popular for little girls. All are good choices though.
  • My son's name is Maddox so I'm pretty partial to that name. I also like Hudson though!
  • I don't like any them. But Emerson would get my vote.
  • My nephew is Hudson, love that name! Emerson is cute too though.
  • Hudson was on my list so it's my favorite. I know a Maddox and I like that one fine. Emerson I would be concerned about the girl thing a little- though I think it is weird people name their girl's Emerson when it means son of Emery, but if you go to nameberry it actually came up as a female name. Huxley is my least favorite for sure. Sounds kind of trendy and made up so it may not withstand the test of time. But I wouldn't side eye any of them
  • I have never heard Huxley as a first name, makes me think of Aldous Huxley, which I guess isn't a bad association but I am not a fan of the name. I like Hudson most from your list.
  • Hudson is my favourite!
  • I know a lot of Huxley's, Emerson's and a handful of little Maddox.

To be honest, they are all quite trendy and popular right now. The only reason I mention that is because you said you your husband doesn't want anything popular.

In my opinion, Hudson is the most classic of the list and will age the best.
  • @holocene, he doesn't want like...Aiden, Mason, that sort of thing.  Like top 20 names.
  • @holocene, but some Huxley's DO exist!  Ha!  That's a good sign.  Seems like nobody had heard of it.  It was a new name to us too, but glad to know it has in fact been used ;)
  • I know of four Hux or Huxley's under age 4, so it's definitely being used!

If you love it, go for it. We love Isla and Violet - both are pretty popular, but we don't mind.
  • I love Emerson, Huxley reminds me of Huntley on Curious George. I don't think any of them are to weird though.
  • I love Emerson and Hudson. But after all it's your baby! My mom always told me to just keep in mind you're going to have to say their name a million times as they get older so you have to make sure you love it. (:

I don't think Huxley will sound as out there as people think it does at the moment by the time your kid is in school. In fact, it doesn't sound out there at all to me now! I think if you love it and it is not debilitatingly weird, go for it. I get not wanting to name him something too weird for practical purposes, but whether others "like" it is a different thing bc who cares if random people like it? You and he are the ones who have to use it the rest of your lives. If people meet and like your son, they will like his name. I live in LA and we are naming our son Sail so I have had lots of the same thoughts and concerns as you! We love the thought it evokes of a sense of adventure and exploration (no his nursery is not nautical themed) :). I have just found that with the variety of unique names surging, it is not going to be as big of a deal down the line as long as it is easy to spell and pronounce.
  • I know a baby girl named Emerson... I guess I am more into traditional names but from your list I like Hudson best :).
  • After saying I thought Huxley sounded made up I just found out a friend of mine from high school just named her son that. I guess it's more common than I had thought :)
  • Aldous Huxley wrote A Brave New World. I'd just assumed that's where the name was coming from.
