I'm anemic and I've been on iron for a month with no change in my fatigue. I actually pulled myself from work because I'm too tired (like, scared to drive tired).
I just found out a couple days ago I'm borderline anemic, so they put me on iron pills. I thought I was always tired because I work crappy days/hours...and well because of pregnancy. I honesty haven't noticed a difference. It's probably too soon.
I've had iron deficiency anemia in the past. It really does take a while for the iron to accumulate once you start the supplements. It depends on how low your iron was but it could be at least a month. Try to focus on also eating iron rich foods, diet change along with the Iron supplements will accelerate the improvements. And making sure you pair it with vitamin c rich food to maximize the absorption. I started taking Blood Builder by Megafood in first trimester to avoid iron deficiency anemia because I've suffered from it in the past & didn't want to deal with it again during pregnancy. Good luck with it.
I found out I am slightly anemic last week and started taking iron supplements. I actually feel like I've been more tired since starting on the supplements, but that could be due to the terrible sleep I've been getting lately. Hopefully after it starts to build up in our systems we will feel a bit better.
My doctor put me on OTC iron supplements at 24 weeks, and I've felt much better since taking them. The nurse warned me it could cause constipation (which is the last thing any pregnant woman needs!), and suggested taking them at night with a small glass of orange juice (to help with digestion), but told me not to take it with my prenatal (it interferes with the iron and will basically cancel it out). From what I've read, you can take them in the morning, too. Hope this helps!
@kanderfish just the mention or orange juice and I have heartburn! Lol I am now taking my iron in the morning and my prenatal vitamins at night to see if that works better. Thanks for the ideas! I'm game to try just about anything (except the oj)
I've been taking iron for about a month. Doctor said it would take a month or two for them to make a huge difference because in third trimester anemia gets worse. I noticed my episodes get better, but not gone all together.

I was diagnosed last week and they doubled me on the iron supplement they told me to get...they also told me to get a stool softener....but to be honest...the iron well there is no need for a softener... They told me if I do not get my iron up I will have a blood transfusion after delivery. I don't know if it was to scare me or what...but it worked. I haven't noticed any difference in my sleep patterns/exhaustion...yet.
@TifVB make sure you drink orange juice or get vitamin c at the same time that you take the iron. Eat spinach, red meat, beets. They are serious about blood transfusion. Low iron is no joke.
I was diagnosed about 6 weeks ago - I will say the iron supplements took a couple weeks but I'm so much better now - They have completely helped me! Fingers crossed for all you ladies that they start to help soon!
Yes, iron supplements helped me so much. I thought was just that exhausted from having a toddler and being pregnant. Its took a week I guess to start helping, but I've kept my house cleanm dishes washed and clothes done ever since. Which is a big deal since I haven't had the energy to keep up with that in a long time. They can make you constipated though, so make sure you try to find one that's gentle and more natural.
I am having to have four treatments of IV iron. I thought maybe the tiredness was from being pregnant! I had 3/4 treatments so far but I am still exhausted.
I was diagnosed with severe iron deficiency anemia before I was pregnant, so the doctors put me on 975 mg of iron a day (in addition to the iron in my prenatal). Even with that much iron, I'm exhausted all the time and my restless legs are out of control. I'm waiting until I'm 34 weeks to go back to IV iron (which I had to have every 3 months prior to getting pregnant). Good luck to you!
My doctor said she would check my iron levels when they did the gluclose test, but I haven't gotten the results back on the iron (the gluclose results came back saying I was within normal range). But I've been having dizzy spells like crazy and always had low blood sugar. Should I be taking in extra iron, or could the dizzy spells be a symptom of something else other than anemia?
Those of you taking iron supplements - are you also using a stool softener? My doctor told me to boost my iron and strongly encouraged the supplement + vitamin C + softener. I don't like to take things unnecessarily so I'm wondering if anyone was able to do the supplements without a softener.

@kkfl2m+b I'm taking an iron supplement but no stool softener (although I bought them during the first tri). I had a less than positive experience last time I used them so I'm trying to avoid taking them with my iron. I've upped my water intake, decreased dairy and increased vitamin C and it seems to help. Honestly until I started using an app to track my water intake I had no idea how behind I was- since tracking it I've actually been more regular because I increased my intake to get closer to 100 oz
@kkfl2m+b I add Benefiber to my morning coffee whenever I didn't poop the day before. I find it will be bad for a week, and then fine for a week, and then back to bad for a week, ever since starting the iron.
I've been on iron for exactly a month. I still have days where I'm completely wiped out, but in general- I've noticed a huge difference! Hope you feel better soon!
