Technology near your tummy

Anyone feeling conscious of your phone or laptop near your belly? I've read it affects men's fertility so I'm trying to be careful. whattoexect.com says it shouldn't be a concern.
Otherwise, I'm 18 weeks, feeling wonderful little movements in there and so excited to find out the gender and have a reveal party this week. What an amazing time!

I had a friend that during my last pregnancy was constantly taking my phone off my belly (or out of my hand if I was holding it there) and moving it 3 feet away. Granted, I know she was doing it out of love but OMfreakingGosh it was annoying!! The sun emits more radiation than my phone/microwave etc. She did the same thing with her phone and her infant, and when her baby was crawling/walking she wouldn't let her come within 5 feet of the computer/tv. She also wouldn't talk on the phone for more than a a couple minutes of she was holding the baby.
We aren't friends anymore. Not just bc of that though.

  • I don't worry about the laptop. I do try to keep my phone away from my belly when I think of it, but it's often in my pocket, so that may be just as damaging, if they are damaging.
  • No .. Aren't there enough much more important things to worry about than your phone or computer near your belly ??

I remember with the last pregnancy and especially during the last trimester, my belly was like a portable table where I rested my hands comfortably on the belly while playing candy crush, or watching youtube videos.  My hubby asked me about the radiation and I'm pretty sure I told him it's only against her butt; her head is towards the "entry" way. :)
  • It hasn't done any harm to the previous 5 so I'm gonna stick with it being okay. Also, like @irenewslee I use my belly for a "table" too lol and I've got no shame in that! ;)

  • i dont have a laptop/computer so i dont have to worrt about that. i keep my cell phone away from my belly tho. it's been proven that they emit radiation & is a possible cause for my stepdad getting brain cancer so early in life. I'm not taking any chances!
  • Honestly this never even crossed my mind. Too much other crap to worry about.

  • I use my belly as a rest to prop up my phone while I use it
  • All of these sound like personal opinions. Doesn't sound like scientific facts.

I always had my phone next to belly. I even put phone on belly when I turned on Pandora for baby. But then my hands started hurting from the sound waves emitting from the phone (I'm a very sensitive person and very intuitive). So that was a scare for me. And now I refrain from putting my phone on the belly at every chance I get. :-S

Isn't your statement an opinion as well?

  • Count me as a weirdo, but I don't hold my phone near my stomach "just in case" there could be an issue. I also don't hold it up to my ear 99% of the time. Speaker phone is my friend. Again...just in case. Honestly, even if there was real reason to be concerned, I don't use my phone enough for it to be an issue, I'm sure.

There was a story about a 21 year old girl that was diagnosed with breast cancer. They had questions about whether it was related to her cell phone because she kept her phone in her bra strap against her skin all the time. She claimed she couldn't hear the pings or feel the vibrate in her purse or pocket or something. Anyway, she was one of those constantly sending and receiving thousands of texts a month and always on her phone...made me a bit more paranoid than I had even been before.

Nothing scientific, though, just one of my quirks.
  • Hit a little nerve with the breast cancer. I seriously, seriously doubt it has anything to do with cell phones. I've done tons and tons of research into breast cancer as my grandmother died of it along with a very close family friend. Cancer also runs in my family. I had my 1st lumpectomy when I was 19. I've never carried my phone in my bra and I know for a fact my grandmother didn't but then again, back then cell phones were hardly a popular item. I think of cell phones were actually that solidly linked to any cancer or problems with pregnancy there would be warnings about them. Like, "along with no deli you should abstain from cell phone usage". Just my opinion.

  • It's definitely a personal preference thing - do what you feel comfortable with.  If it gives you peace of mind to keep your cell phone away from your belly then do it.  Same with not standing in front of the microwave if that helps you sleep at night.

  • Yes my statement is an opinion as well.

And I did massage therapy before I became pregnant. So I feel the energy levels below the surface that are normally not felt to an average person. Yes might sound like weird stuff to a normal person. But if I was talking to a group of people from the massage world they would know exactly what I mean.

  • Oh and also I do not work like most of you on here. Don't have a vehicle (live in the middle of no where, vehicle dependent area). So most of my days I spend in bed with my phone in my hands. So most of you might not even use your phones as much as I do to feel the effects. Hold my phone in my hands for 18 hours a day. And definitely feel the difference between when I have sound coming out of the Lil speaker or not.
  • We don't work? Could have sworn a good portion of us do.

  • Sorry ment to say I don't work ,like most of you on here do work. My brain is working faster then I'm typing.

And dang look at all the pregnancy hormones jumping. I just shared my own personal experience did not expect to be jumped and judged like so.

Maybe this belongs in the unpopular opinion.
  • I'd say being able to feel the waves your phone omits is at the very least an UO, borderline more similar with seeing UFOs and Bigfoot.

FWIW I am attached to my phone BECAUSE of work nearly all weekday hours (24/5?) and I think you sound a little more hippy dippy than most eccentric people I know - which is a lot.

Absolutely nothing as long as you're still in touch with reality.

I totally get the hit nerve, and I definitely wasn't intending for anyone to take that one story as much more than it was. One story.

My dad passed away when I was 19 from pancreatic cancer but survived malignant melanoma before I was born. I have other family members who have had lymphoma and breast cancer, as well, and I personally was terrified earlier this year that a large ovarian cyst could be cancerous - it wasn't, thank goodness. The affect of cancer is something very near and dear to my heart, as well, so I do apologize for hitting that nerve.

The girl I was referring to had no family history of breast cancer, so it was just something odd enough to stick with me. I'm definitely not making a sweeping claim on the cause of cancer by mentioning it. Just explaining, in part, where my paranoia is coming from on the cell phone thing.
  • I don't pay too much attention to "odd" causes of cancer. I think it's a bi+€# of a disease that sometimes appears to strike for no rational reason. My grandfather died of lung cancer and never smoked a day in his life. Never was exposed to cancer causing chemicals and we have no family history of cancer. I'm not about to blame it on a cell phone or any other object without further scientific evidence.

  • Causes are all different. The whys and how's of the cause is not as important as to being there for the person going through a difficult time!

Huh? This thread is about side effects of technology. I'm confused as to what supporting someone who has cancer has to do with it?
