Crib Bumpers

Hey ladies!  I'm actually only 5 1/2 months pregnant but wanted some advice from current parents.  I recently ordered the crib bedding, including an adorable bumper!  But I just read that it causes SIDS and they're a big No-No.

Do you have a crib bumper??

We use a breathable mesh bumper, but I believe even those are technically a no-no these days. I definitely wouldn't use a traditional bumper.

  • No! I can't live with the guilt of any little thing I did wrong if the baby did have SIDS.
  • I used them with DD1 but got a breathable one for DD2. Honestly, the crib for us was decoration for the first 4 months anyway. They don't cause SIDS, but do increase the risk. If it stresses you out, I'd avoid them.

  • I ordered one too when pregnant, read about the risks, then returned it. It was a bummer but not worth it. Honestly, now I wish we didn't even buy a whole bedding set because we can only use the sheet and skirt. It's a little ridiculous seeing that we spent over $100 on it.
  • Isn't it crazy that they even sell them any more @brittster15 ... such a scam for all of us moms overcome with the cuteness of something we will barely use! :) I bought one with DD1 and then just did separates with DD2.

  • I don't know why they even make bumpers. They are a suffocation risk because baby can roll over and get wedged on the side and not be able to roll back and if the face is against the bumper baby can suffocate. Totally not worth the looks of a cute crib. I bought a sheet set with the waterproof mattress covers and fitted sheets. It was much cheaper and all you should have in the crib anyway.

Mesh bumpers are fine and I used them with both of my kids just so their legs didn't get stuck in between the crib slats. They screamed their heads off when that would happen so I put the bumpers in. It's all about what you are comfortable with though.
  • Yikes I'm not there yet, my LO is only 10 weeks. Definitely something to consider getting. Babies can breathe through the mesh, I just wouldn't put anything plush in a crib until baby is atleast a year old.

Yes, definitely not. For me, the pain and screaming from getting a limb stuck in the crib slats warranted putting a mesh liner in. Once they were both mobile and cruising around the crib.
  • Mesh liner is now on shopping list. Don't want to wake up to that trauma. My LO is flipping himself over sometimes and I told the pedi he keeps rolling on his side when I put him on his back. She told me to stop swaddling just incase he flips himself and gets his face up against the side of bassinet/crib and can't get himself free. Just thought I'd mention it while on the SIDS/suffocation topic.

    Yep, time to stop swaddling!
