positive frer, neg test at doctors office

Good morning!

So I posted a few days ago on the mc board that I had a positive hpt and got started on progesterone. I saw my doctor today just to talk about some things and they did an in office pregnancy test. The test was negative. This is exactly what happened to me when I had my miscarriage. I had all these positive hpt and their test was negative. So my doc said that since I tested before I missed my period that I could have gotten false positives. The lines on my frer are getting darker each day. And I'm just freaking out because I feel like this is a repeat of last time. I felt like I wasn't taken seriously by their test was negative. How frustrating. Anyone ever get a false positive( or several false positives?)

Re: positive frer, neg test at doctors office

  • When was the last time that you tested positive? If it was a few days or more, it could be that you had a CP/MC and now the test is reading negative. False positives are very unlikely...

I'm so sorry you're going through this. You are definitely in my thoughts...

  • Thank you. I just tested this morning before I left for my appointment. I just feel like it's a bad sign since this is exactly what happened with my mc.
  • We did some bloodwork and I probably won't get the results until monday
  • Are you having your levels checked? If so, you'll need to do a repeat blood draw.... it seems like you're not getting very good answers from your doctor.

  • You know usually I do. I have been seeing her for a while and she's super nice. Today I felt like maybe they were annoyed that I went in before I even missed my period. I felt like I wasn't even being heard bc their test wasn't positive. I just went in to talk to her and to ask to have my levels checked and stuff more often. She did mention IF the bloodwork comes back positive we will do repeat bw. Im so frustrated
  • I'd be frustrated as well. With my last MC, I got my BFP at 7DPO and requested to have betas drawn. Luckily, I continued to advocate for myself when they were super low and had the nurse write 'STAT' on my bloodwork so I would get them back within hours. I was a little pushy, I admit, but sometimes it's worth it.

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. Your doctor should be more responsive to you IMO. It's possible that their tests are not as sensitive as the FRER and hopefully your lab work will show that you are indeed KU. Are you going back into days for repeat Blood?
  • She said IF this bloodwork comes back positive we will repeat. This same thing happened last time. They didn't believe me and it came back positive. I just took another frer when I got home and it was positive
  • But you're testing before your missed period, so it's possible their test just isn't picking it up yet. You'd think that doctor's would have super sensitive tests, but you never know.

Let us know what you beta is. I'm keeping my fx for you!

  • Thank you! That's exactly what I said too. They should have better tests!
  • Doctors actually tend to have fairly non-sensitive tests.  If they need more sensitive than their pee tests allow, they'll do a blood draw which provides more information than a pee test .
  • She said IF this bloodwork comes back positive we will repeat. This same thing happened last time. They didn't believe me and it came back positive. I just took another frer when I got home and it was positive

Why do you keep capitalizing IF? "IF this bloodwork comes back positive we will repeat."

I don't understand. Obviously if it's negative there's no reason to repeat bloodwork, and if it's positive you need a second draw to make sure your numbers are rising appropriately. It seems like you're implying that they're doing something wrong with the bloodwork when all sounds normal to me.

False positives are very rare, more than likely their in-office HPT wasn't as sensitive as the ones you used.

I'm sorry that you think they're not believing that your test was positive but it seems like they're doing everything appropriately. If they didn't test your HCG, then I would see the problem.

I think she's trying to convey that her doctor is so flippant like "IF you somehow come back pregnant then we can talk". She probably feels like her doctor is being condescending and not validating her pregnancy and worries.

My doctor actually was the same way, very big on the IF you're pregnant despite the fact that I had 3 positive home tests. It might be a liability thing, it might be a " lets not get your hopes up" thing, I'm not sure but that didn't surprise me at all.
  • Why did your doctor even do an in office urine test? If you had a positive hpt and a history of miscarriage, I'd think the first thing the doctor would want to do is check your betas. It seems like a urine test would just be repetitive if they were going to do a blood draw either way.

If you went in before your missed period there's a good chance their test just wasn't sensitive enough.
  • I am capitalizing IF bc that's how my doctor said it. Like they didn't believe I had positive hpt because they got a negative one in the office. That's how she said the word if
  • It's very frustrating. It's also just making me feel like I'm reliving my mc three months ago. This is exactly what happened to me then. Just have to wait it out. It's hard

Like I said above, don't stress about the if, the phlebotomist I had said IF too. I think they don't want to risk that you had a super faint positive that was actually an indent or evap and them saying "you're pregnant". For context, my phlebotomist was commenting on how I have very deep veins in my arms and said " If this comes back positive for pregnancy, hopefully you'll be one of the people whose veins become easier to access due to the hormones" or something like that. It freaked me out at first but I realized it was very much of a cover-your-a$$ statement.
  • Sounds similar to my situation! I tested at home & had a BFP. Went in next day for urine test at doc office. They called it a "weak positive" & to come back in two days. So, two days later took my last hpt & had my darkest line ever. Went into doc office, did urine test. Got the call back & nurse says "negative pregnancy result". I was SO confused. Asked for bloodwork that same day as they wanted me to wait four days to retest! Went in that same day & did bloodwork. Couple hours later, "You're pregnant!" I'm now 8w2d! Insist on bloodwork (as it seems you did). I had a mc early August, so I know how you feel. It's a roller coaster ride. You have to be your own advocate. You're the one paying the bill, so insist when you feel you must, for additional testing. Good Luck!
  • How far along were you when it happened to you @MellBabyPeeps?
  • @jacobsone2 Two days past when I was supposed to get my period is when I got the weak positive. Then four days past when they said I wasn't pregnant with the urine test.
  • My doctor just called with my results. My beta was 93 last week at 3w2d. Can anyone remember what theirs was around this time?
  • The single number honestly doesn't make a difference at all. No one is going to have a number similar and have the same outcome that you will. Just being honest. What's going to be of most importance is another blood draw that you can compare with so that a doubling time may be seen. When is your next draw?

    This....
The exact number doesn't matter, what matters is that it's increasing and by how much. FX for you.
