Hip Displaysia

Our sweet little boy was born on the 29th. After 12 hours of hard labour and absolutely no progress we discovered that he was breech. After he was born the Dr who checked him out said that due to being breech he could have some hip problems and it looked like he did. Yesterday we went for an ultrasound and found out that his hips did not develop properly and we are now being referred to an orthopaedic surgeon. The doctor told us that he will most likely end up in a diaper splint as we caught it so early but had he been much older they would probably have to take more durastic measures. He is a very fussy baby, I'm sure because he is uncomfortable. His hips don't bend well. It is difficult to diaper him and his legs won't 'frog' out at all. The only time they come close to straightening out is when he is super relaxed and nursing. I feel terrible for him! Have any of you dealt with hip Displaysia before? How did it go with the splint or braces? How long were they in them? did baby seem uncomfortable in the brace? I am glad we know what is going on and hope that we can deal with it soon and with him being so young treatments go quickly. Just looking for any stories or experiences.

Re: Hip Displaysia

  • Our oldest son had hip dysplasia. It was discovered before we were discharged and they had the ortho team come look at him before we left and he was fitted in a Pavloc harness. He was in that for about three months, then we did double diapers for a little while. Then moved to a firm foam harness to wear only at night and naps. He is 19 months old now, we stopped wearing the last harness back in June when he really started walking around and getting out of bed. At his last appointment in September, his right hip is normal and his left (which was far worse from the start) was just a few degrees from being considered normal. He was also a breech baby. Our son we just had was not breech and upon peds checks at the hospital his hips seemed fine but they are doing an ultrasound in a couple weeks just to check and be sure things are ok with him. Diapering takes a little practice and breast feeding since you can't cradle quite as you would (so you keep their legs in that frog like position), but you get the hang of it all. I attached a photo of what our first harness looked like. Clothes went over the harness - no pants with this. Good luck with everything! It is great they have caught it so early - he won't remember all this. It's an amazing thing how 'moldable' their little bodies can be!

  • Thank you so much for the response and photo. We are still waiting to hear back from the surgeon about his appointment. It's really nice to hear a first hand experience. It's all been a lot to wrap my mind around

  • Hi! My little boy was born 2 weeks ago and he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia as well. I've seen two orthopedic surgeons so far and he's been in the harness since the hospital. He has a good prognosis since it was caught so early. We've been told it will likely be 6 weeks of full time wear and up to 14 weeks of total treatment but weaning from the harness (meaning less full time wear). I was so upset at first but this is really common and treatable. Many of my girlfriends have had children or family members with this condition and all have ended up ok. I am a bit sad that my boy can't wear sleepers or any of the cute pants outfits that were bought for him but eventually he will be able to. Hang in there mama. It'll get better and it is best for baby to get the harness on. It really doesn't cause them discomfort but man it gets dirty fast!

  • ^^ I wondered why white had to be the color of it! We did our best to spot clean as needed but it was dingy when we were all done with the first.
  • My baby was also breech and had hip dysplasia at birth. We were referred to an orthopaedic surgeon in another city at 2 weeks of age. By the time we went to the appointment her scans showed, and the surgeon said, that her hips were now 100% normal. The problem had corrected itself in a matter of 2 weeks! If the hip dysplasia is caused by being breech (no underlying issues), there is a good chance it could self correct. I was very relieved!!! Don't stress too much, it may improve some or completely by the time you see the surgeon. :)

My baby was born breech last Friday and we were told the same thing, that it could correct itself. I guess practices are a little different here (UK) because they won't do the ultrasound until my LO is 6 weeks old to see if it does correct itself first, then if it hasn't it's into the harness. It's quite scary but from what I've read most baby's cope fine and the problem is easily corrected. I hope so, 6 weeks of waiting to find out won't be easy!
  • My little girl was never breech but we were told to see an orthopedic dr. Before we left the hospital because the pediatrician felt her right hip popping.

At a week old she was put in the pavlik harness, at 2 weeks we just had an ultrasound and the dr. Said both hips are staying in the socket and the angle they measure is looking exactly where he thought it should for a week in the harness. . We have to keep her in it 24/7 for the next 2 weeks then we'll be able to remove it for baths then an ultrasound at 6 weeks to see if we can remove it completely.

It's definitely harder to dress her, she can't wear all the cute things she has, and baths are a struggle but she doesn't seem to notice it much and it's all worth it that it was caught early and she most likely won't need a cast or surgery! !
