Are you up and at 'em?

New moms: How long after delivery were you walking around and getting out of the house?
My baby is likely to be born this weekend and I'd really like to join my family for trick-or-treating next weekend. I'm not sure if I can expect to feel up to it or not.

Re: Are you up and at 'em?

  • I had my baby last Friday, went home on Saturday and took the whole family to the playground Sunday. That's how I've been for all of my births, but people seem amazed so maybe it is unusual. I just feel so much better when I'm up getting things done and moving around.

Well dang ladies... I was gonna brag about being proud that I could walk around the house 11 days later... Now I feel like a slacker...
  • I think it really depends on your delivery. Factors like if you have a CS vs vaginal birth, if you get tears and stitches or not, hemorrhoids or not etc. Also, your body's healing process and timing counts too
  • Had my c-section on a Friday, was walking 8 hours later, went home Sunday and was at the grocery store that night.
  • Had vaginal delivery with 2nd degree tear, 4 stitches. Was walking around a lot the next day and Went for a 20min walk outside 2 days later.
  • I had a vaginal delivery with 2nd degree tear and stitches. Went on a 15 minute walk after 5 days pp and my vagina and butt hurt so bad the next day. I don't think I would be up for all the walking of trick or treating but everyone is different.
  • I went back to school after one week but I was still not 100%. I'd say by 2 weeks I felt pretty normal
  • I had a third degree tear and I was able to walk around fine but very very slow! Getting up and down was the worse part. I went to target 5 days pp and it was way too much (of course everything I needed was on opposite ends of the store). But I was alone when I went.

I'm just over 3 weeks pp and I'm not sure I would still be up for trick or treating long distances. I'm still uncomfortable at times but also still overall exhausted
  • I was up and at em too soon. I had family dinner to go to the day I was released from the hospital and the following day. Then I went shopping after that....needless to say I ended up with an infection and fever and chills. Yes I did have a little bit of placenta inside me that played a roll in that but I pushed myself to hard immediately following labor. Now this week (babe is 2 weeks old today) I relaxed, cuddled with LO, caught up on Netflix, slept when baby slept and you know what. I loved every minute!! When will I get time to do this again?! I have a friend coming to help me next week, we will catch up on cleaning while DH finishes some work in the garage...after next week I will start getting out more. Don't push yourself to hard. Relax, let your body recover and snuggle your LO as much as possible!
  • I had a vaginal birth with a second degree tear and stitches. I was up walking around as soon as the epidural wore off and I could feel/control my left leg a few hours later. I was up right after delivery with help to go to the bathroom. I went home the next day and we've been busy with doctors visits and my lo being back in the NICU for a few days, so I've done a lot of walking and moving around. She's only 9 days old now. I did feel a little sore at first but have to remind myself to slow down sometimes so I don't do any damage.
  • I had a vaginal birth (terrified of an epidural) and a superficial tear that required two stitches on my labia (sorry if that's TMI!). I was up walking within two hours and felt pretty much back to normal within 3 days. I was also active during my pregnancy with regular prenatal massages, chiropractor appointments, and prenatal yoga. My labor was only 10 hours and baby was 6 pounds 7 ounces. I think all of that played a big part in my quick recovery!!!
  • I had no problems walking around an hour or so after I gave birth. I was back to normal fairly quickly.
  • I had a vaginal birth, 23 hours of labor, and a 2nd degree tear. I was up walking around 2.5 hours after my daughter was born. Went home two days later and was cleaning up my house.
  • Vaginal delivery, 2nd degree tear, epidural.... Literally walking around my room an hour after. Wore baby to target 4 days pp, like others... I feel better out and about and as long as I listened to my body and took it easy, felt activity helped me heal :)

  • We went to the playground and dr office at 4 days pp. I went to church 10 days pp with DS1. It definitely depends on your delivery. If you go, I wouldn't go too far and have a backup plan to get home (someone goes and gets the car or something) if you start to feel bad walking.

  • I'm 5 days pp, epidural, episiotomy, second degree tear. I would def be more active if not for the spinal headache I got as a result of the epi. I'm hoping it passes as I think activity might help with healing down there. Right now the most strenuous thing I've done is a diaper change!

  • This is #4 and we have been up and at em since we left the hospital - went to a charity shopping event that afternoon for an organization I'm very involved in, ballet watch week for
#3 and soccer game for #2 yesterday and church today. I think the HUGE downside of feeling well enough physically to be so active is that the support from DH has all but dried up. My body feels back to normal (lucky to have no stitches, tearing or even swelling by the time I went home) but emotionally I am a mess as the hormones leave my body. DH "got it" when I needed breaks to rest with the first 3, but by being so gung-ho to get back to normal this time, I feel like I've already handed in my "pamper me" card.
  • I am 1 week PP today. My doctor (I think very purposefully in front of my husband) says no cooking, cleaning, driving, laundry, dishes, or basically anything else for one week. I have used that to stay home and snuggle with my baby and not do a thing. I did help paint a little yesterday and cleaned a little, but mostly I've bonded with baby. Evidently no laundry and dishes for a week for me meant NO ONE did laundry or dishes all week (there are 7 of us now), so I have a big job ahead of me next week. This week was reality great though. I feel good. Baby is happy. My other 4 are happy.
  • I ended in c section and at the hospital they made me walk around so we went for 3 or 4 10-15 minute walks a day. But LO ended back in the hospital so I haven't had much time to sit back and relax. I've been really sore in my belly now so I think I may just take it easy for a few days.
  • I had my daughter on Wednesday, 10/21. I was lucky & had no tearing, so no stitches. Was up and walking within 2 hours.
Came home Friday & had no problem walking around the house.
Saturday I left baby with dh and snuck away to go to an art exhibit for my older dd's school. I even stopped by the store to pick up more pads for myself, lanolin, and a couple of things I just knew dh couldn't really be depended on to get right.

I was pretty drained and exhausted afterwards, though. Probably a little too much too soon, but I survived.

Haha! I can so relate to this. I'm feeling great, but it's all relative. When I say I'm feeling good, what I mean is that I'm feeling good for a woman who is 5 days post-baby, NOT that I'm feeling good for the average person. My dh does NOT get that!

The day after she was born, the nurses kept offering me pain meds, which I didn't feel like I needed so I kept turning down. Dh actually had the audacity to say out loud "why would a woman need pain meds the day AFTER giving birth?"
    Seriously?

And, yeah, pampering has been non-existent.
  • I was up walking within his of giving birth. With my first I had an epidural and it took a bit longer to get up and moving. I think not using it helped me feel normal quicker.

I feel great but I get overwhelmed with going places. I EBF and I guess I'm all not comfortable with knowing what to do in public if he needs to eat (feeding on demand).

It depends. You can risk uterine prolapse and bleeding if you go too hard after a rough birth. It was a week before i felt ready for heavy walking and my birth and labor were relatively easy, other than the 10 lb baby. Can somebody drive and let you rest if you need it?

If he's hungry, feed him! I was nervous too but pretty much gave myself no choice by planning day trips to the state fair and the zoo with my husband. Baby wouldn't take a bottle so it was up to me. I used a cover and got comfortable pretty quick. I much prefer feeding baby in public under a cover rather than have a screaming, hungry baby. Plus there are fitting rooms if you go to target, mothers lounges or family bathrooms at malls/department stores. I started out feeding in my car before heading into the store. I recently figure out how to feed baby while wearing the baby bjorn so I can be hands free when she eats!!!
  • I had a 23 hour labor, 3rd degree tear and 2 labia tears. I'm 11 days PP and still having to take it easy.

I have a back injury so getting out of bed was a struggle, although walking was fine. We took her out 2 days after discharge to see the pediatrician. It's challenging to take a newborn out because their schedule is so demanding but I walk outside any chance I get. She's almost 4 weeks old.

Edit: just for frame of reference, I had a med free vaginal birth with a small episiotomy. Baby girl was only 6 lb 3 oz. So on that account I didn't have much healing to do luckily.

  • Thanks everyone! I ended up with a c-section late Sunday after a 20hr labor, so I don't think I will be doing much trick-or-treating. I'm feeling good (relatively) and even walked out of the hospital holding my son, but I don't think I would be able to keep up with my niece and nephews for very long.
  • I'm 5 days PP and yesterday we walked around Walmart shopping for an hour and then got home and did stuff with the kids that required me to stand for a while. It kicked my butt hard core and made my hemorrhoids flare up even more. Today I stayed on the couch almost all day and then when it came time for trick or treat I felt great! We trick or treated for almost two hours. I still felt pretty well
  • I had a c section on 10-27. We were home on the 29th and baby had his first ped appointment the next day. I felt like I was pretty great about going out- we'd go shopping, an appointment, visit grandparents all in one day- but then I had a trip to urgent care where I thought I had broken stitches or something due to some bleeding. They said I overdid it. I'm feeling good though. We leave the house once a day for some kind of outing. I had been doing more before the urgent care visit so have cut way back.
  • I had an induced labor, 12 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing with vaccum assistance at the end (and epi). I ended up with a 3rd degree tear and stiches but was able to get up slowly the next few days, but it was tough. Im now about 2 weeks PP and feel good! Sneezing and pooping isn't as scary..... haha.
  • ASAP. I waited until day 4 (wasn't allowed to leave the hospital until day 3) because the ped told me the "2 month" rule but I was DYING! I would have been up and out within hours of delivery but we both had a pretty rough delivery and combined with my spiking a fever they had me there for way longer than I wanted. Since then though we've been to the pumpkin patch, grocery store, two doctors appointments, target, lots of walks around the ponds by our home, re-organizing our entire apartment... you name it! Do what feels right to you. There's no blueprint. Just don't forget to give yourself an "off" day just like you do with exercise because you will definitely feel it.
