1st Trimester

Sick and fit?

Hi Ladies,

This my 4th baby. I really want to keep a handle on weight gain this time around.. I'm 5.7 amd 180 lbs just had a baby a year ago. And haven't lost the weight when to my surprise I found out I was pregnant again.. So my question to all of you is ... How do you work out when all you do is puke or get dizzy?

Re: Sick and fit?

  • I just keep it to walking right now since i wasn't really working out before i got pregnant and luckily i have a treadmill at home close to the bathroom just in case i need to run to it. Other than that i'm trying to eat better and drink as much water as i can stand.

  • GIRL, I know the struggle. DH and I started going to a trainer in June. I wanted to have a fit pregnancy where i was still working out throughout the pregnancy. When I sit up form doing chest presses I cant help imagining myself at 8 months with a huge belly. It's hilarious to me.

Make sure you're hydrated. My dizziness/vertigo is mostly dehydration related.

I used to jog about 6 mph on the tread mill, but now I walk at 4 mph and 1-2% grade. I also lift weights. I dont worry too much about the amount of weight when doing chest or arms, but with legs i dont do cardio. It's more to keep an eye on my temperature.

If I need to sit down I do. I will sit down for 5-10 minutes until I feel better.

I also dont do abs on the ground anymore. I only do crunches on the ball. I have a feeling keeping my core strong will help me push the succubus (jk) out when the time comes.

I'm hoping I can get back to jogging in 2nd trimester. It helps with stamina.

All this said, I have puked at the gym.

    GOOD LUCK!!

  • Everyone is different but for me, I feel less nauseous when I exercise. If exercise makes you feel worse, you should listen to your body.

I had morning sickness my first trimester badly. I usually work out in the morning but i switched to evenings since I was getting dizzy and nauseas working out in the am. I stopped using the stair machine amd treadmill my heart rate would go really high and make me extremely dizzy. I stopped my crossfit as well for about 8 weeks. I started doing exercises on a ball and just kept doing my weight lifting exercises around 18 weeks i went back to full workout mode. Back to running and cross fit pretty much daily. It gets better! Don't give up on working out. Also drink lots of watet before you go and during i take several bathroom breaks during my work out but it makes a difference the more water you drink. Also I eat 14 grams of protein an hour before going helps with the dizzy spells. Just stick it out as much as you can and do what you can the more you slack the harder it is to get back to the routine of working out when your feeling better. Also prenatal yoga is something you should look into its relaxing!
  • Thx ladies! I try not to slack but sheesh I wish we could feel as usual whike pregnant
  • I had my last a year ago too! I recently started working out and eating right and lost 18.5lbs prior to my "surprise" you're having another baby. I have mostly just been walking to keep moving since I found out and today I signed up for Beacbody on demand. Turns out that Autumn (the girl behind the 21 day fix) has an "active maternity" series in there. I am going to start doing that on top of walks since I can't do all of the workouts I was doing before. I'm really hoping it works and can get me back to this weight after this baby is born.

  • @Uniquewayz I've actually read that staying active can help you not feel so sick. I don't know if that's true because I was one of the lucky ones who didn't get insane morning sickness.

@ijstarr28 I feel the same way about keeping my core strong. :) I'm sure it's going to help us in the longer run, and so will staying in shape!

  • OMG. I wasn't insanely fit or anything before baby but I was very active. Gym 2 days a week, kickboxing & krav maga 2-3 days a week. I ate relatively well (by no means perfect, I am a bit thick naturally anyway).

I get tired SO easily now, my stamina and muscle endurance is no where near what it used to be, I'm just now getting back to my martial arts classes 3 days per week and gym 1x a week but my appetite is still super wonky. Sometimes I have no appetite at all so I just eat whatever I can stomach, which isn't always the healthiest especially since it's typically convenient because cooking was awful.

But, something is better than nothing! I'm trying as best I can and the hubby and I are going grocery shopping tomorrow to make some healthier, yet still convenient choices. That my insane nausea can tolerate.
  • The hospital just gave me some stronger meds... yes I get so sick that I have to go to the hospital and get treated... ughhh
But now that I have that I will try to get to walking and maybe try some yoga... wish me luck!
  • I would just wait until your morning sickness goes away, and then begin exercising at that time. Trying to push yourself while dealing with being nauseated and probably throwing up, will stress your body, and it's important to make sure that you're taking care of yourself, especially in the first trimester. I wouldn't stress the weight too much. If you're not able to keep a good handle on your weight during this pregnancy, no worries. You will give birth at some point, and after you are established with caring for the new baby, you'll probably find yourself wanting to get your body back.
