Anyone else afraid they won't make it to the hospital???

I'm on my 4th pregnancy, and my other 3 have been pretty quick; First was 7 hours, second was 3 hours (after having painless BH most of the day) and third was 3 hours start to finish after my water broke. I'm terrified that by the time we get our other children where they are going, or someone comes, we won't make it. Plus, I'm totally dreading l&d, since I don't do any pain meds b/c of the effects they can have on the baby or slowing down labor until a C/S is necessary.

Re: Anyone else afraid they won't make it to the hospital???

  • Me too - we don't have anyone really close to watch my daughter so We'll have to wait for someone to show up if he comes early. Or have my daughter (9 years) sit in the waiting room by herself which I hate the idea of. That being said - your 3 hour labors make me optimistic and I totally get your pain fear. Right there with ya.

This is my 3rd baby and my first was 4 hours start to finish and second was around 2 hours. With my second I had 1 contraction and woke my husband up because I knew. Then when I had my second contraction I told him to have my parents come. My parents got there super fast (7 min away) and we are 10 min from the hospital and it was 330am so we got to the hospital around 4am and she was out at 513am I did have the epidural which slows everything down too so I'm nervous that this time will be so fast I won't make it or will be alone with the kids. I have no problem calling an ambulance lol it'll be fine

Although I have to add my husband is a first responder and has delivered babies before so maybe that is helping to ease the anxiety.
  • Luckily I live like a minute from the hospital...seriously, I could walk there.  I do have a 6 year old but my parents are only 10 mins away and ready to help.  But you never know...I will still probably be panicked when it happens.  I have friends who pretty much gave birth within 30-60 minutes after water broke/contractions start.

  • Yes! I'm so worried about what in going to do with my daughter if things progress faster then expected. Her gramma on her dads side said she would get her no problem but she's also like an hour from us and 40 from the hospital. I'm freaking out!!
  • Nope. This is baby 9 and none of mine weee fast. Sigh. I am in for a looooong time lol i am more concerned about getting there too soon and not getting my vbac
  • I'm afraid of not making it, my daughter was born in an hour..... From pinch to her being here.. So fast! We have a plan... Leave right away our Dr said. If our older kids are in school we have a grandparent will get them, if the kids are at home... A relative is going to meet us at the hospital. Fingers crossed all will be well!
  • This gives me hope that first children don't have to have ridiculously long labor times!!!! My youngest sister was born on the side of the highway, so I know it's possible. Mom will be driving me, and she's the one who experienced it...... And, since I'm planning to have as little intervention as possible, I'd be okay with that. Not ideal, but hey, so long as baby's healthy, right??
  • Since it's my first I don't expect a precipitous delivery. However, I work where I am delivering and I'm working until I go into labor. So that gives me comfort in the event of a fast labor. I'll just have a co-worker take me to L&D. Lol
  • A bit.. We moved recently and our hospital, instead of being a 10 minute drive away, is now 1/2 hour drive away. From the house. From work it's about 20 minutes.

There is a closer hospital and I'm considering it. But the doctors I have been working with since the beginning will only be in attendance at the original location.
  • This is my biggest fear! My other two labors were pretty quick, this time we live 25 minutes from the hospital...I like to labor at home and am scared I'll wait too long by mistake and deliver on the side of the road!
  • I've been worried about it the whole pregnancy. My first labor was 6 hours, my second was 3 and my hospital is 30-45 minutes away depending on traffic. And yet, when labor started I drove myself to the hospital. I needed my husband to get the kids to daycare, which wasn't open for another 45 minutes and I wasn't comfortable waiting that long to start heading over there. I had contractions 4 minutes apart, 30-45 seconds long the whole drive, but thankfully still tolerable. I was 100% prepared to call 911 and wait for an ambulance if it got worse, but I made it in time. Looking back I can't believe I was so dumb, but I think my body knew I had enough time, but only just barely. What happens happens, just have a mental backup plan, knowing a closer hospital and being prepared to go there if things progress rapidly is a good idea (I was dead set on my hospital because I knew the NICU was a distinct possibility and it's much more advanced than the closer hospitals)

Out of curiosity how many hours was your quickest labor?

  • Me. My third was born at home, I didn't even make it to the car nevermind the hospital!
  • Yes, I'm terrified. I work all the way up in the Bronx and having to make it back down to Brooklyn to my hospital in NYC traffic scares the crap out of me. It's a 1 1/2 hr commute. Also, going into labor on the subway is a reoccurring nightmare. My husband actually told me to just stay on the train because it would get me to our hospital faster than taking a cab/Uber. I was pissed at first, but he's probably right. My doctor said I'd probably be ok as it's my first child, but in the future I might need to take earlier leave.
  • My 2nd baby came just over an hour after my water broke with only irregular braxton hicks beforehand. I'm pregnant with our third and at our first appt my doc told my hubby to research emergency delivery for both home and in a car. So needless to say I'm terrified of not making it. My mom and Nana both have a history of precipitous labor which can be genetic. So my doc said if it takes longer than 45 minutes for this labor she'll be surprised. Can you say panic attack? I totally get where you're coming from!!
  • I live an hour from my hospital and this is my second my first was 14 hours but I am still very worried I won't make it
  • The thought of not making it to the hospital has crossed my mind.  Mostly because we will need to find arrangements for our dog and I'm not sure how long that will take.  He'll be 7 months old and we do not live near family.  Not to mention we live in a college town and most or all of our friends will be leaving for the holidays (I'm due 12/28).  I'm hoping our dog trainer can keep him, we've already talked to her about it.   It will just be so last minute since labor can happen at any time, I'm paranoid we won't be able to get in touch with her or that she will be fully booked.  Anyway, I'm sure this sounds silly to some people but I'm worry about my little pup!
