Husband Lost His Job

I'm almost 13 weeks along and my husband just lost his job. I'm freaking out because my paychecks only cover the mortgage, health insurance, and some utilities. While we do have some funds saved up, I don't know if we'd be able to stay in our house much past the birth of our child.

Neither of us has ever lost our job before. Does anyone have any best case scenario stories?

Re: Husband Lost His Job

  • I'm so sorry! My husband lost a job over a year ago. We were renting and we quickly moved to a place that cost half the amount. Definitely apply for food stamps, wic, and/or Medicaid if you qualify! It was a lifesaver for us while H was looking for a job. We had no extra cash but we were at least able to pay our bills. Best of luck to you!

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. My husband got laid off just before we got our BFP and is still going on interviews to try to get another job. We're in a similar position in that we have savings, but we'll quickly eat through them if neither of us is working come May. In the meantime, we're relying on my salary.
If you qualify for assistance, apply. Also apply for unemployment. There's a waiting period for unemployment, so apply asap. They have job search services too that they require you use to qualify (at least in our state). Work on a resume and cover letter asap that is tailored to his profession-- and job search!

My husband has actually been laid off before; last time it only took 2 weeks before he was hired at a design firm. This time has been more taxing at nearly 3 months now. Come up with a budget that works for your family and stay positive!
  • Yes as PP has said if he didn't quit then he can file for unemployment what you get depends on how much he was making/taxes from previous job! Start looking for another job ASAP because it's very true when they say it's easier to find a job when you have one! Good luck and hopefully things will work out for you!
  • I'd cut back on expenses where you can, apply for unemployment, and hopefully he'll find a job soon. Fingers crossed for you!
  • I'm sorry. I can't imagine how stressed you two must be. I would file for unemployment and any other assistance that you may qualify for. With it being the holiday season maybe he could find a seasonal position, part time even, to help y'all get by for now.

I'd also cut every bill you have that is not essential like cable, 2 cell phone plans, gym memberships, etc.

  • What the pp's said.  And luckily enough it is the time of year when a lot of places are hiring seasonal work.  Part time work makes your unemployment benefits stretch out and last longer.  At least here in NC they allot you a certain amount of money you can make per week and then anything over that is subtracted from your weekly benefit amount.  And some work is better than none.
