Leftover pregnancy nose/workplace dilemma

The lady that runs the building I work in is psychotic about keeping the place clean, which is great except for the fumes. Like nasty, hit you in the face bleach/harsh chemical smell as soon as you walk in (and never any widows open). I'm still breastfeeding so I don't really want to be inhaling this stuff all the time, plus it just seems excessive and unnecessary for everyone who works here too. She's headstrong and not the nicest woman, so I think talking to her would be futile. Can I get a doctor's note for this? What would you do? Any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated.

Signed,
Fuming with fumes

Re: Leftover pregnancy nose/workplace dilemma

  • It seems that being able to open a window near your workspace would be the easiest compromise. I would just sit by an open window to work, and tell anyone who asked the reason. If this is not possible, you may have to approach your doctor for a note. Does this lady have a boss you could speak with? How about talking to your boss?

  • You could say the fumes are casuong you have headaches and are interfering with your ability to work effectively (its kinda true. The stress from you thinking about it could cause a headache, and you are certainly not working effectively for worrying). Tell them that without some fresh air you're going to have to visit the Dr to discuss it, but wouldn't they rather try to avoid that situation? Let's open up a window, shall we?

Alternatively, are there other coworkers you could recruit to your cause? If a bunch of people stood together on this matter, it might help with getting results

  • That's actually a great excuse for our department to switch rooms...we don't have any widows and my boss hates it.
  • Thanks @mellymar and @heidiiwa, guess I never thought of that because we have no windows to open, haha.
  • Can you suggest some greener, chemical free cleaners? Target has a great selection. Mostly all natural with much lighter fragrance.
