Most complicated pregnancy for me to date

I have severe asthma (since I was 16). This is my 3rd pregnancy. 1st baby, a boy full term, c section for failure to progress. 2nd baby, a boy full term 9lb 10 Oz scheduled c section 13 days before due date. Was on the ventilator for 2 days at 16 weeks due to severe asthma attack. No further problems, no health issues with him, he's 5 now.
Now this current pregnancy. I am 33 weeks with a baby girl. I have been in the hospital 4 times with asthma. The most recent time was a week ago when I was on the ventilator for a week, was sent home on oxygen, high doses of steroids. At this point my high risk OB doesn't want to wait until 39 weeks especially since baby girl is measuring 6lb 13oz. I'm doing so much research into lung maturity and steroids and I think I'm just making everything worse in my head. I'm a nurse so I think I just need to find a way to turn off my nurse brain off until the doctors pick a date. I'm hoping for 35 weeks as my breathing is getting worse, the bigger she gets. I don't even have a question at this point, I'm just rambling and nervous and hoping someone has a similar situation. Anyone?

  • I'm just so frustrated with my body right now! Our first pregnancy was a baby girl whom we lost at 22 weeks and now Im so nervous this is history repeating itself. Thank you guys for your prayers, it means a lot that anyone is listening!
  • I just wanted to send you a hug and say hang in there.

I have never had breathing issues during a pregnancy but I have certainly had health issues due to chronic hypertension and type II diabetes with all three of mine.  Each time I have actually had to fight the high risk and OB staff about my hypertension - everyone seems to think I am going to turn into a pre-e case at the drop of a dime (which i know is a possibility) even though my labs and bloodwork are always clean.

I am facing a 37 week induction right now because my BP was slightly elevated at my appointment yesterday and the doctor this time around literally flipped out over it and is not taking my other pregnancies in to account (or the fact that each time I hit 35 weeks my baseline BP goes up to where it was yesterday).  Early inductions frighten me because I had an induction at 39 weeks with my first child and she wasn't ready to breath yet so she was on a ventilator for a month and was touch-and-go.  I had to have another induction with #2 at 39 weeks and she was perfectly healthy so I know it can go both ways.  Like you, though, I can't shut off my brain and I worry so much about an induction at 37 weeks.

My husband got to deal with an emotional train wreck last night and we discussed asking for an amnio to check lung maturity if we really get boxed in to an early induction.  I know that amnios have their risks, but I think that would help out my mind at ease if I had a test result showing this little guy was ready to breathe.  Maybe that is something you can look into and discuss with your doctor to see if it is even an option for you.

I have to take a deep breath a lot of times and remind myself that there are instances where even if the baby isn't quite ready yet it is safer for them to be outside than in and that when you have chronic health issues sometimes you have to go day-by-day to see what the best solution is for everyone to have a safe, healthy outcome.

I have you and your little one in my thoughts and heart!
  • Not similar with the asthma but I have gotten 2 rounds of steroids in the last 48 hours to get my baby's lungs more mature due to pre e. The high risk doctors told me today we're gonna hope to get me to 35 or 36 weeks (I'm 32 today) but I totally understand your nervousness! Hang in there mama!
  • Sending prayers and hugs!!
  • Sending prayers your way. I have had some issues with my pregnancy (keep losing weight instead of gaining) and have experienced extreme fatigue and breathlessness but nowhere close to asthma. What I have feels horrible, I'm can only imagine what you are going through. You are a strong courageous warrior and that's the same fine material your LO is made of. She will be strong like her mama. I have no doubt you will both be fine. You hit the nail on the head though, you may be getting into your head a bit much. Just take a deep breath, pray for strength and keep calm. Take it one day at a time mama and you will probably make it past the 35 weeks. And trust you are in good hands. I know it's hard to relax but you can do this! Blessings to you and yours.

    We are listening and praying.
  • Thank you all so much. I read about amnio to check for lung maturity too and wondered if that was on the table or if they were going to go ahead with their own dates regardless. My appointment is for 1115 today and I don't think I've ever been more nervous! I will update when I know more today. The other downside is because I'm out of work and we planned for me working until December I'm stressing due to finances on top of everything else! This was supposed to be the 3rd and final pregnancy. The one where I got to do all the things I never got to do with my boys, like nursery decorating and baby showers. All the "fun stuff". I just keep thinking, well at the end there will be a beautiful baby girl you can see and touch and every second of misery, and worry, and being on the ventilator will be extremely worth it.
  • I will be keeping an eye out for your update. As you said, all of this worry and heartache will be more than worth it once your baby gets here. Stay strong, Momma!
  • You both are in my thoughts and prayers.

  • Hope the appointment goes well!
  • Update: the OB has agreed with the MFM dr and decided to deliver between 34 and 35 weeks (I'm 33 weeks today, so that means sometime between next Thursday and the thursday after). He started throwing out a bunch of scary situations like stillbirth and baby dying in utero if they didn't do this in time. Not to mention gestational diabetes and her estimated weight 6lbs 13oz. I'm absolutely terrified and completely unprepared (no bottles, diapers wipes etc).
  • I'm so sorry he hit you with so many scary scenarios. Are they just concerned you aren't getting enough oxygen and therefore baby isn't getting any either? Just wondering where their heads were at about the stillbirth possibility.

Amazon.com can get you all kitted up diaper and bottle wise if you are home bound (generally for much better prices than babies r us online). Can you ask a family member or friend to organize an emergency diaper/bottle/baby supply party/run?

Deep breaths, Momma. It will all work out and your OB team wouldn't recommend delivering early unless they really felt there was true need to do so.

I will continue to keep you guys in my thoughts.

You will also be in my thoughts! Don't stress too much about what you need and just focus on the basics for now.
