Baby Crossed Legs @ Ultrasound

We had our anatomy sonogram yesterday and the technician kept saying, "I'm pretty sure it's a girl." Baby's legs were crossed and she couldn't see any bits so I think she assumed girl just to be done. At no point did she sound sure. I went and bought the Walgreen's gender prediction test just to see....I know it's unreliable....but I was curious and it came out boy. I'm just not confident in my gender answer yet. Anyone have experience with this happening?

Re: Baby Crossed Legs @ Ultrasound

  • Yes. For the second time.  My daughter had her legs crossed through 3 ultrasounds.  Here it is 11 years later, and this baby is doing the same damn thing.  Fortunately I get to go back next Wednesday because baby was in such a scrunched transverse position the tech couldn't get all the necessary pictures for the report.  I'm hoping and praying we get to see if its a he or a she.

  • The sex of your baby does not show up in urine like the prediction tests require. If you want to have a guarantee, there are many places you can go for an elective scan. Finding out the sex at the anatomy scan is a perk, not the reason for it. If baby's legs are crossed, the tech can do their best to guess but won't sit there waiting just to confirm it.

  • hahah, i did this to my mom.
she had to reschedule SEVEN times before finding out i was a girl. lucky for me, my little man opened those legs for me & we got to find out at the end of our a/s.
  • Actually, Europeans have been using the home prediction tests for years and have found them to be quite acurate. Where are our ladies from Europe?! Your feedback would be appreciated!

Although it is a catch 22, my baby is transverse and I have a low-lying placenta, ON TOP OF I have to have my cervix regularly monitored, so I have other ultrasounds scheduled.  I will keep trying to find out this time, even if it kills me!!!

  • It seems like they'd just always be accurate if they worked at all, otherwise they are just playing the 50:50 odds, right? And honestly not trying to argue since I know zilch about them. I wouldn't be surprised that something like this comes about in the future, but if it was legit now, why doesn't everyone use it, instead of paying $100+ for elective scans that happen at inconvenient times?

  • I agree completely. It seems pretty suspicious, and I'm not sure if it is a urine or blood test (but I can find out!). I spent some time living in Italy and know ladies who have used them with accurate results. It could just be chance that they were correct. A close friend of mine had a little girl 8 months ago and used one during her pregnancy. I'm going to message her and see if I can get more details! Haha... Stay tuned!
P.S.- not meaning this to be argumentative either... I'm just very curious!

I'm gunna be honest with you here, i have no idea what it means when your baby is transverse. & i have an idea of what a low-lying placenta is, but not 100% sure.. haha. young, FTM here. but it sounds like it's all making it harder for you to find out! keep trying mama! hopefully it wont take as long as it took my mom to find out.
  • I don't believe it's reliable at all. It's more for fun! I read some reviews and some women have had 3/3 pregnancies and it was right every time, and some it didn't work at all. The instructions state to use first morning urine ONLY. So maybe it checks the ph balance somehow? I don't know lol! I just wanted to see what it said :)
  • There are home blood tests that you can order here in the US but I've read that they are easy to contaminate if any male DNA sneaks it's way into your sample. I bought one of the urine tests for fun and it said we were having a boy. Three ultrasounds have shown that our baby is NOT a boy. If you really want to know I would just pay for the elective ultrasound. If you don't want to do that, I guess you will know in 20ish weeks!
  • Morning urine or night urine it really doesn't matter. There's not anything there to tell the sex of a baby. You can pay any of us what one of those costs and we can give you the same 50/50 answer you'll get from one of those. Like a pp stated just be happy in the fact that you've got a healthy little baby growing in there :)

Where in Europe would this be? I'd never even heard of these tests before I came to TB and I definitely wouldn't waste my money on them.

OP, it's too bad they couldn't tell you the sex of your baby, but like PP said, that's not the purpose of an A/S. You'll know for sure when baby's born. If you really can't wait, you can always get an elective u/s. For now, congrats on the healthy baby.
Alright.. I've got a message in to her... I'm super curious to see what she says now too. @DutchLucyLu, the gals I know are in Italy, but you would think it wouldn't just be there.

Thing is, Europe is made up of lots of actual independent countries. There are probably loads of things they do in Italy that Dutch (or Swiss or Spanish, etc) people have no clue about and the other way around. :P

Ugh, maybe it's me but that sounded a little rude. Maybe you should have specified instead of broadly saying Europeans.

  • I'm also European and have never heard about this outside TB...
  • @kynbar5 you're right. Sorry ladies. Any other gals from Italy that have tried these? Like I said, it could very well be a similar form to what we have in the States, but now that this is going, I would love to know if there is something with a more definite answer offered there. My friends seemed to stand by their tests but maybe that was just because they worked for them?
  • You can get an elective ultrasound at most boutique places for 30.00-50.00. If you really want to know I would chance going to one of those places versus spending money on a urine test that in no way can tell you what you are having. Usually those places will let you come back for free if they are unable to tell you due to the babies position.

  • Baby 2 had her legs tightly crossed, and they guessed girl at the ultrasound. We ended up needing extra ultrasounds and they confirmed girl.

Baby 3 had his legs tightly crossed and the ultrasound tech started to guess girl. He suddenly moved and uncrossed his legs and let us know that he is a boy.

So my take away is it could go either way. Helpful, I know!

Sorry it took me so long to reply lol...Transverse simply means instead of being head down like most babies or breech (head up), my baby is laying side to side- and on its tummy at that.  So its laying on its belly, legs crossed behind it (all I can think of is a centerfold lol).  I can't tell if it has changed positions since then- all my movement feels low although I'm now 23 weeks and my uterus is above my belly button- maybe its crawling around in there? lol
