Vaccination references?

So, I was watching Private Practice last night and one of the story lines was about a Mom who didn't immunize b/c of her concerns re: autism.  It made me start thinking about some of the discussions I've seen on the boards (this one and others) about vaccine schedules, options, etc. Long story short, I want to start doing some reading because I am completely clueless. I guess I just want to know more about regular vs. alternative vaccination schedules. (I do plan on immunizing, just want to know more going in).

Can anyone recommend some books/references that have been helpful in sorting through this information? TIA!

Re: Vaccination references?

  • I like the Dr. Sears Vaccine book - I thought it had a lot of good info on why the vaccines are used, what they protect against, etc.  They also offer info on an alternate schedule.  We are doing the regular schedule but I have spaced out a few of them by a week or so.

  • oh I also thought Baby 411 had some good info too, if you have that book.

  • the Centers for Disease Control website has the most recent vaccine schedule posted.  it's the one that health departments recognize everywhere (and I'd imagine physicians offices)

  • I read thru most of the Dr. Sears book, I found it extremely informative. We are doing all of the recommended vaccinations, but spacing them out so he only gets a couple at a time, mainly to limit the amount of aluminum he gets exposed to at a time.  It means more visits to the peds office, but that way I get to find out how he's gaining weight and such more often. We didn't think there was a compelling reason to give him so many vaccines at once, the way the AAP  schedule suggests.
  • Thanks ladies, I'll check out all the books/sites you mentioned.

  • I also read the Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears.  ANother book is What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Vaccinations
  • If you decide to go with an alternate schedule, make sure you ask your pediatrician if they will work with it.

We took our son to the pediatrician for the first time today and some of the doctors in the practice are willing to follow the alternate schedule, except for the one we saw.  We want to follow an alternate schedule, so I guess we will have to see a diff. doctor next time.
