High-Risk Pregnancy

Meds question

Pregnancy/Baby question: I'm 36 weeks pregnant with my first child. I am bipolar 2. Tried with my psychiatrist to go off meds in order to get pregnant but I crashed. So can't do that. Currently on Lexapro 20 mg and Lamictal 200 mg & have been throughout the pregnancy.

Baby girl has been doing great-no cleft palate or spinal anomalies found. I did go into preterm labor @ 29 weeks which my ob was able to stop. I go for fetal stress tests weekly & it takes awhile to meet her accelerations even after I'm given peanut butter and soda. This could be caused by me taking my meds in the AM, she's sleepy/inactive. My psych dr said she could have withdrawal or irritability for a few days after she's born. I'm worried I won't be able to soothe her. And she's prob going to need her blood levels checked with a special test to see how much medicine she actually is ingesting. I may not be able to breastfeed depending on what the levels reveal, which bums me out because I at least want to try.

So I guess my question is what is the best way for us to advocate for our daughter??

I tried to register her with a pediatrician I picked but can't until she's born. So the ob/gyn is done once I give birth & I can't even give her peds dr a heads up on the situation. My husband & I are just really worried that the ball is gonna get dropped on this.

What would you do??

Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

My sister was just on Lexapro and, while she did get off of it, quit breastfeeding after two weeks because her PPD was horrible. It was even bad at the hospital, the morning after she had the baby she woke up and had no idea where she was so they sent a psychiatrist to her room.

Most hospitals have in houses pediatricians called hospitalists. We saw one because the hospital we chose to deliver at was so far away.

Also, if your hospital doesn't have a milk bank, there are organizations where you could get donor milk and take it to the hospital with you (as well as supplement with for as long as you want to "breastfeed)." If you're interested, then check out Human Milk 4 Human Babies. I "like" them on Facebook, but you'd want to try to find your regional page. There's also another organization called Eats on Feets, but I find HMHB easier to use.

  • Hi,
Bipolar 2 here too. On trileptal, seroquel, celexa, and klonopin. Both ob and shrink will not take me off as way more risky than any possible effects. They do say i should not breastfeed though to limit the exposure. So far all of my tests have been completely normal. I am worried about withdrawal but they will keep a careful eye on baby before discharge.
  • There's a great list of meds on Kellysmom.com that will tell you whether a med is okay for breastfeeding. I am surprised that your psychiatrist doesn't know? I am a diabetic and my primary doctor knew and/or she always double checked any meds while I was breastfeeding. It also took me forever when I got my NSTs done. Eating, not eating, drinking water, having a snack. My daughter was just stubborn.
