1st Trimester

Should I be concerned?

I was supposed to start my period October 26, but instead I had spotting one moment I used the bathroom and that was all. I have since had bad cramps especially when I'm active and doing stuff. I took a pregnancy test on Saturday that said I was pregnant, then went to the women's center to be sure and their test also confirmed I was pregnant. Should I be worried about the cramping? It gets bad at times where I think I'm about to bleed.

Re: Should I be concerned?

  • Probably not a reason to be concerned as it is a common occurrence. If you're not bleeding I'd say you're fine, if they get very intense or you bleed, call your doctor. If in doubt at all, call them.

  • I had some pretty bad cramping on and off weeks 4 and 5, its normal, just your uterus doing what muscles do in response to pretty much anything, contracting, which we feel as a cramp. As long as you aren't bleeding it isn't something to be worried about. I'm week 6 and its easing up now, I have maybe one real cramp a day, usually at night and it might be gastrointestinal, I'm not 100% sure.

Tl;Dr - totally normal as long as you aren't bleeding. You aren't alone. It gets better.
  • I had cramping throughout most of my first tri, it can be a bit worrying but is usually quite normal. If you find that it gets worse, or becomes constant (as opposed to the on/off period type) then i would consult a doctor.
  • Cramping is definitely normal. You should only be concerned if they get really bad and you start bleeding bright red and fill a pad in an hour.  Congrats!

  • It's totally understandable to be nervous about it, this is my second time around and it still brings up scary thoughts. Everyone else covered it though, menstrual like cramping is usually normal unless accompanied by heavy bleeding.

  • We're in very similar situations. I had brown spotting last Wed (10.28) and was convinced my period would start ... 6 pregnancy tests on Sunday (11.1) confirmed I am pregnant. I've also had cramping but I remember this from my first pregnancy too. The spotting could have been old blood from implantation and the cramping, if not severe and accompanied by bright red blood, can be super normal. It's when the two happen together that there should be worry or a call to your OB ... I had both in my first pregnancy and it turned out to be a cyst on my ovary that lasted my entire pregnancy. I now have a very healthy 2 year old.  If you're really freaked, it never hurts to call your OB. Good luck!
