Cold/stuffy nose and saline rinse! :D

Hi guys!  I just wanted to share in case anyone else is in the same boat as me.  I just caught the worst cold and have been miserable with a completely stuffy/runny nose for the past three days, and awake several times a night blowing my nose.  I'm very anti-medicine even when I'm not pregnant (long history of a mom who abused OTC meds...) so I've been very hesitant to try anything that is supposedly approved for use during pregnancy to relieve my congestion.

Anyway - my friend recommended NeilMed Sinus Rinse with the squeeze bottle (vs the neti pot) - if anyone hasn't tried this yet, it's fantastic.  I felt so much better after just the first use - it cleared everything out.  So if anyone is hesitant about using meds right now, check this out if you have a stuffy nose or allergies or feel a cold coming on.

  • I use SinuCleanse (available at nearly every drugstore) and OMG it works so well.  Just be sure to lean forward and not blow your nose through only one nostril (the water goes to your ears!).

Seriously, it's the grossest idea (squirting water up your nose until all the gunk comes out?) but the results are so spectacular... And it even feels good once you get used to it.

  • I have a netti pot and used mine last week. It was amazing!

  • I must be the only person that doesn't like the netti pot. Had a cold a few weeks ago, so bought one since we can't take anything. Personally I found it to be a waste a money. But the breath rite strips- those were miracle

  • I also found the neti pot a waste of money: my sinuses were so blocked that it did nothing. I literally stood there with a teapot up my nose waiting for something to happen for 15 minutes. Hence the squirt bottles: sinuCleanse and the one the OP mentioned. Totally different, much faster and more powerful.
  • I use the saline nose spray for babies...I'm obsessed with it, works so well!

If only that worked for me. Even before getting pregnant the rinses never did much. I have a sinus infection now with a fever, which is not the norm. I'm horribly nauseous as a result and can't keep anything down. I had to break down and get tylenol cold for symptom relief. Along with antibioticss, and some otc for the nausea, I should be able to make it at work. I hope :-S
  • I'm mixed on Netipots. Mrs. Schicksal uses Zyrtec every day it seems. The in-laws gave her a Netipot but her parents are also BSC and give her a bunch of random stuff that doesn't work. I'm curious if she would try it but skeptical because of the source. Then there's also the problem of getting her to try it, and I'd probably have better luck trying to get the cat to try one.

For those of you who have a stuffy nose and are congested due to pregnancy but not from a cold have you also experienced itchy red eyes?

Do you think that it is possible that now at this point in the pregnancy I can develop allergies?
