Breastmilk question

So Im pumping a bottle a day for DH to feed LO but what if she doesn't fully finish a bottle and the breastmilk was in the fridge and warmed prior to feed? Can I put it back in the fridge and warm again or is it garbage? Or how long can a bottle sit out after it was in the fridge then warmed?

Thanks!

Re: Breastmilk question

  • I was told once it's been warmed you need to use it within 1-2 hours.

  • I don't put anything back in the fridge after it has been warmed. I try to keep freshly pumped milk and milk that has been warmed out for no longer than an hour.
  • Breastmilk is too valuable to me. I can't bear to toss it. I usually give it at the next feed over throwing it out. I did that with DS1.

  • I don't warm my milk. My baby is not a picky eater and will drink body temp milk or refrigerated milk, she nurses but still drinks mostly from a bottle (she has latch issues... But still tries to nurse, so I let her). I definitely put back unfinished milk and just use that first for the next feeding and will put the rest of the feeding in a fresh clean bottle. There is no difference between warmed milk and cold milk, just baby's preference. This would eliminate concerns about re-warming milk for a second time.
  • Hey there! I asked the midwife about this and she gave a very simple rule:
Once the breastmilk has been pumped it can stay in room temperature for 4 hours. If you put it in the refrigerator you can keep it for 4 days. If you want to freeze breast milk you can keep it for 6 months. But once you have heated the milk you won't be able to use it again, I'm not sure about how long after though.. I hope this helps. Congrats by the way!!
  • With the latching issues my baby also has it, but my midwife told us about the 'Nipple Shield' and it's a miracle! It's a little rubber that goes over your nipple to make a nipple extension, and she can latch onto it like she does on a bottle. I highly recommend this to any new mother, and it helps with sore nipples ;)
  • Maybe make 2 smaller bottles instead of 1 bigger one that way you don't have to waste any ;;)

At room temperature, it can stay out 4-8 hours. In the fridge for 3-8 days. Any milk I pump that my son doeant finish goes back in the fridge.
