Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Formula Suggestions?

We had to recently put our 3 week old on formula after breast feeding didn't work out for us.  The doctor started us off on Enfamil Newborn, but after many explosive diapers we decided to switch to Similac Sensitive.  She has only been on Similac for a day, but is super fussy and not sleeping well.  Thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Formula Suggestions?

  • Are they milk based? Ours had that and developed a bad rash due to allergies. We use soy formula now and we are fine.

  • Might not be related to the formula at all but it's hard to know for sure. I had my 2nd child, my DD on Similac Sensitive and it eliminated the fussiness and her other problems.

Your LO is probably just having a hard time adjusting to formula period. They spend practically the first month of their lives getting their GI tracts adjusted to food and it isn't easy. Both my kids had problems.

  • When LO was very young we tried both Similac and Enfamil from the free trials they sent us. He did well on Enfamil Newborn, Infant, and Gentleease but when we switched to Similac Sensitive, all hell broke loose. He reacted very poorly to it. We went back to Gentle ease for awhile and we're now using Infant.
  • We chose Gerber Good Start since it is the only one that uses whey protein as their main ingredient. So far our LO has made the transition well.
  • I would ask a pedi for sure but I think babies need time to adjust to anything. My mom had major issues with me as a baby and eventually had to use nutramigen but she had told me that she had to give me at least 3 days on the same formula to see if I truely could not tolerate it. Your baby is still little and could just be fussy too.
  • My daughter started on Similac Sensitive but we switched her to Similac Alimentum. Her tummy seems to do better with the new formula
  • How long did it take to see a difference?
  • How did you know it was bad enough to need to switch? My baby is 2.5 weeks and we switched to formula a week ago. She hasn't been pooping consistently. Sometimes it is once a day and sometimes only every other day. She also has a lot of gas - which she did before, but this gas seems to bother her more and make her fussy at times. But not all the time. But last night she wouldn't settle after transferring her into her bassinet and she ended up screaming. I laid with her on my chest but she seemed uncomfortable and then would pass gas. It seemed to help if I patted or rubbed her back or tummy when she started to squirm and squeel. I just dont know if this is normal or a response to the formula? I don't want to throw her digestive system off by switching if she doesn't need it - I know it's delicate at this time. But I don't want her to be eating something if it's not working for her....
  • It took a couple days to notice a real difference. The biggest thing I noticed is that her acid reflux seemed to lessen and it didn't seem to bother her as much at night. My doctor recommended this formula and we seem to be having great luck.
