Breastfeeding

Want to stop BF

Hello--

My baby is not yet on solids but I do want to stop breastfeeding and would like some suggestions from any mom's who have been there. He is BF now and we are using bottles (we will supplement with formula in the evening so my husband can give me a stretch of sleep).

What is the best way to do this? I feel like I need a plan but feel overwhelmed with creating one. What complicates it is that he will not want to take a bottle from me :/

Thanks for any help you can give us.

Re: Want to stop BF

  • Do you want to stop breastmilk production or do you want to pump exclusively and just give bottles?

  • Thanks for asking that I should have specified... I want to stop production. I pumped exclusively with my first-- hard work. I am just not sure how to do this since my LO is BF and not only bottle fed.
  • You need to wean slowly to avoid engorgement and problems like clogged ducts, mastitis. Since baby will take bottles I would pump just enough to get rid of the full feeling when baby would normally eat and then start stretching pumping sessions. The less you pump out the less you produce within a day or 2. The supply will keep adjusting so be patient and just don't let yourself get engorged. I was doing this myself before going back to work then I changed my mind and decided to pump at work. My supply dropped pretty quickly to feeling nearly dried up and then within a couple days of nursing /pumping I'm back to EBF. There is also a tea called "no more milk tea" I didn't use it myself but maybe it helps.
  • Oh and if baby still likes breast do the don't offer / don't refuse method. Let baby nurse in leu of pumping session but keep giving bottles and eventually baby should stop asking for breast especially as supply drops and it gets harder to get milk out.
  • Okay. Thanks for the help.
