Bed Rest Suggestions

I was told yesterday I have to be on temporary bed rest for one week.  But next Monday I will get re-evaluated and will most likely have the bed rest extended.  I am having contractions anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes apart, unless I have my feet up.

My personality is one that it is 8:20 on my first day, and I am already going stir crazy!  I don't know if I can watch any more Netflix, I'm not great at super crafty things, and not being allowed to do housework I am at a loss of what to do!

Any suggestions??

Re: Bed Rest Suggestions

  • Read a good book? Maybe learning or self teaching how to crochet or knit and make a blanket for the baby? Sorry you are on bed rest I would be the same way going crazy!!

  • Hmm, if I were on bed rest I would probably read a lot, catch up on writing in my pregnancy book, find some good games to play on my phone or laptop, and try to sleep as much as possible. Also, I know you said you're tired of Netflix, but if you can find a good show to get sucked into, binge watching can make time fly! Oh, and make a list of things DH can do to help out and get done so you don't feel like you're falling behind on everything.
  • Reading books about labor, childbirth. parenting, etc? There are so many! It might be a good time for some education if you are going to be a FTM.
Do you have any hobbies or interests? I really like science and math and get really into books about theory and such. (I know that's not everyone's bag.) Is there a topic that you are interested in learning more about? Maybe some books on that?
Recipe gathering on pinterest? Maybe try looking for some good slow cooker meals or casseroles that you can double and freeze for when LO comes.
You could also start a book series.
Do you celebrate any gift giving holidays? Might be a good time to get a jump on some online shopping or at least decide on gifts for family and friends. You could put these on a private Amazon wishlist so when you are ready to buy, you can just order things.
I agree with PP that it would be fun to make a blanket for your LO as well.

  • I would really suggest learning to crochet or knit. There are some pretty awesome things you can make (stuffies, blankets, etc). If you want to start crocheting I would suggest a g or h size hook (means it won't be too small or finicky to work with). Pinterest has a great collection of free beginner projects that are pretty quick and easy :D

  • Sudoku, cross word puzzles, actual puzzles, 3D puzzles, adult coloring books (I have one and it is highly addicting and time consuming. Great for stress), crochet, knit, read, yo yo quilts, etc. unfortunately you may have to learn to be crafty. If not you're pretty "limited" to reading and cross words and things like that.
  • Bed rest is tough. I'm on modified (which is 4-6 hours lying down) thank goodness but strict is hard. Shows, books, reading up on baby stuff really helped with my last pregnancy when I was on modified. Also there is another website keepemcookin.com that has a lot of suggestions and another forum to discuss bed rest. Not sure how far along you are but most dr will let you off after 35-36 weeks. Something to look forward to. HTH!
  • @MaMinette13 - Do you like to write at all?  It's National Novel Writing Month (I'm participating in hopes of finishing the novel I've been working on for a few months) - even if you're not much of a writer it might be a fun thing to take your mind off of being bored.  Think of a fun idea and just start writing, with the goal of 50,000 words by end of November!

Alternatively, are there any low key projects you can do online?  For example, I have still, after 2.5 years, not put together a wedding album from our wedding and reception photos and am going to do that online at Pinhole Press once I'm on maternity leave.  They also have holiday cards, if you have some photos on your computer already and want to play around with holiday photos.  :)

Anyway, best of luck!  Hope bed rest passes quickly/healthily.  I would be going stir crazy too!
  • These are great suggestions everyone!  Thank you!!  I have some fun things to try!

  • If you haven't preregistered with your hospital yet, now is a good time to get that done while you have time!
  • Adult coloring books are crazy tedious and good for relaxation! :-)
  • Bedrest here. I don't know what kind, as others say modified etc. I was told to "lay as much as possible.
It's been a week so far- I have sudoku, puzzle books, my adult coloring books should be delivered today, a couple movies. I crochet but haven't since bedrest started. I used YouTube videos to learn.
I'm also working from home so that takes up 8h.
Internet trolling too... It gets hard to be positive lying down all the time, best wishes for you! Hopefully you can come off sooner rather than later!

  • besides the other answers, I am using my time to research good pediatricians in my area and read up on breast feeding and newborn care. I am also going crazy! I can't stand being laid up! I have been lucky enough to work from home which keeps me busy but today is my last day at work :(
  • You might also take some online classes and learn some new skills. Lots of free stuff out there.

  • Last time I studied for and took a bar exam, but I don't recommend that. ;)

Then I watched Netflix, read, and did Rosetta Stone Spanish. Good luck!
  • Besides all the other great suggestions, i would suggest writing letters to bub, organizing photo books of past holidays etc on the computer, maybe you could do a personalised calender for christmas as presents? Write your christmas letter and cards. Get (temporarily) addicted to a computer game-sims, checkers, scrabble etc? Mind numbing i know, but would help pass the time!
