Breastfeeding and Pumping Moms please help!

Long story short, BFing did not work out with my first I made it 10 miserable weeks before I switched to FF completely.  This time has been going better although I've been mainly pumping since it gives me more time with my toddler.  I have always had a lower supply with both of my kids but I've generally been able to provide at least 2/3 of DS2's daily intake.

I am now 12 weeks PP and have seen a serious dip in my supply in the last few days.  Is this normal? I'm still taking Fenugreek, 3 tablets 3x a day, I'm using Fennel essential oil 2x a day but I will admit I had a day or 2 when my water intake was less than ideal.  I've been making a real effort in the past 2 days to hydrate but I'm still below where I was.  Is it possible to get back those extra ounces? I was feeling great to make it to the 3 month mark and hoping to continue but it isn't looking good right now. Even power pumping I'm only getting 3.5 oz, its just not even close to being enough for my son who eats a ton. Any suggestions?

Re: Breastfeeding and Pumping Moms please help!

  • My stepmother made me some lactation cookies and I noticed a difference in my supply the first day. There's a lot of different recipes you can try on Google but the active ingredients in all of them are brewers yeast, oatmeal and flaxseed. Also nursing as much as possible to stimulate production.

  • I drink Vitamin water which helps! Also try Mothers milk tea! Good luck!
  • Maybe add a few more pumping sessions? With my first, anytime I noticed a dip I'd add a MOTN session and that helped boost things.
Keep drinking LOTS of water and make sure you're eating enough. Rapid weight loss can slow thing down too.
  • At 12 weeks your supply regulates and changes from hormone driven to supply and demand. It's normal to see a drop at this point. There's a great exclusively pumping group on fb that has great tips and tricks. I believe power pumping for you is best option
  • Thanks! I think I'm going to add a session and try to power pump in the evenings and at nap time.  Hopefully things will pick back up for me.
