Well this was a ticker change but I just realized that's already been posted, so here's a new getting to know you instead!

GTKY- What's one thing from your childhood that you want your own children to experience too?

  • @ohbaby714 I second this!!!

Also... With the technology age, it's becoming harder and harder to get kids to sit down for a good old game of monopoly, candy land or Life. I still have those board games and I will definitely be playing them with my children!
  • Like pp, I second the family game nights and having dinner together at the table.
  • As with the PP I want my children to experience the power of imagination and play; especially outdoors. So many kids nowadays are stuck on the computer and video games inside all day that they forget there is a great big world outside to explore. Its so important to learn how to use your imagination and kids are losing that. When I was a kid I played outside until it was dark and the street lights came on. I didn't get a video game system until I was almost a teen and so that experience growing up shaped who I became

Ahhhh Candy land was the best!
  • I second everything that has been said! Tooo much technology these days! Let's go outside, play an actual board game, build a fort and definitely eat dinner together! I don't want my kid to have their own tablet, phone, itouch etc until atleast 12...that's how old I was when i got mine and only because I walked home from school so it was for safety reasons.. Granted I did get to play some educational cd games on a desktop computer growing up but i was no where addicted like kids are these days!
  • Disney World, hands down.  It's something I know she will already grow up which is awesome.  I go every year, sometimes twice, with my family, and my brother and I both did internships with them.  We're a huge Disney family.  Already have our first trip booked with LO for next October, even if she won't remember this trip I can't wait.

  • I know it seems like a very small detail, but when we were little all the way through when my brother and I were in college, we had this felt Christmas calendar my aunt made us.  It had a blank tree and then each day of December you picked an ornament out of its date pockets and put it on the tree.  When I was little it seemed so magical and exciting and even when I was older we had such fond memories of it, I want to replicate it for our little one.  :)
  • @brushesnbrunch haaha funny you say that! My mom still has the original hooked up and I'll stop by the house and I'll find her sitting in the bedroom floor totally consumed!
I told SO we needed to either get original Nintendo, N64 or a wii to play all the good stuff!!
  • DH and I both want our kids to love playing outside as much as we did. We just moved out to the country this year are both excited to watch our kids explore the woods
  • @dragonfly321 if you get a Wii, get Mario Party. So much fun! H and I were obsessed for a good month

  • Outdoors I can definitely agree with! My kid doesn't get a phone to go places with until high school. Sorry, just no. I don't even take my phone places. You can handle your business at home. You don't need friends, I AM YOUR FRIEND. (Ha, joking of course.) our family is spread along the west coast so she will travel a lot. :)

I want her to have the same over for animals and joy that I do. I never feel alone knowing something with fur is around. I just hope she can have the same bond some day! People let me down all the time but my pets never do.

They have simulators you can download onto a PC for all of those! I don't like new gen games that much so H downloaded basically every console known to man before 2005 for me .its free and so worth it. Just watch out for viruses.
  • I know my kids will be outside a lot because DH is always outside and DD loves it too. I would like them to find a sport they love. Some of my best memories are from my swim and soccer teams growing up. DD already loves the water and gymnastics and has a pretty good kick for a two year old. I'm pretty sure I was born to be a "soccer mom" lol
Also I'd like to second family vacations, Disney, and family dinners. We always sat at the table together. DH grew up only using the table for holidays so it's really hard to break his eating on the couch habit
  • Family game night and family dinners!!
So many Families now own all the board games but never take them out, we used to play board games together all of the time.

Traveling but we didn't get to this:

I want to be able to travel and take them with us! What's traveling if you can't bring your kids and let them experience it with you?
My dad goes places all of the time now and leaves my youngest sister at home....somtimes it seems okay but it just seems silly to me
  • Oh! I thought of another. DH grew up camping with his family, extended family and friends. They all had campers and everyone would set up a meal plan ahead of time and take turns cooking together. They all still do this and we join them when we can. For holiday weekends they go to a campground not far from all of us and every summer they take a two week camping trip to myrtle beach at the same place they've gone for years. DH and I are trying to save up for a small camper so we can join in the fun since we've started to outgrow staying on the couch in his moms camper lol. He and his family have so many great memories from all the years and I can't wait for our kids to have new memories of it.
  • @wisco29 I hear you on the travel thing!  I was recently looking through some old pics at my mom's house, and I found a postcard my mom sent me when I was two or three from Paris.  I was like, "What!? You went to Paris and all I got was this lousy postcard?!"

  • Like others said, playing outside! We never had video games and we spent the whole summer outside. Along with that: a neighborhood with lots of kids around to play with, and the freedom to wander the neighborhood a bit. I had a great amount of freedom as a kid to play outside until dark, wander to a friend's house, ride my bike around, etc. I want my kid to have a neighborhood that is safe enough and kid-friendly enough to allow that.

I'm sure it's a uo but I want to share the experiences with the girls, not leave them at home everytime we go somewhere. We have plenty of time to travel when they are grown up and have their own families, plus maybe then they will want us to come with lol
  • GTKY- What's one thing from your childhood that you want your own children to experience too?

Camp outs! We practically lived at the lake in the summers. My kids are still a little too young for it, but we try to camp out in the yard at least once a year to try out the youngest in a tent. With twins on the way it will probably be another two years before we're really ready. I hope the older kids won't be too old to enjoy it at that point.

  • Like almost everyone else said! Playing outside and not stuck behind the TV or video games! We used to play outside until it was dark out- walking thru the woods and finding all kinds of fun stuff. And definitely game night/family time. The technology Era is awful..all these kids with their faces buried in their phones at what I think are inappropriate times..learn to socialize with people! Family vacas are a definite..I also remember baking cookies at christmas with my mom and I always helped in the kitchen with my dad l, and we always had fun..my husband helps in the kitchen a lot, so I picture our little family making dinner together and cookies and whatever else
  • My family has country property that was (and still is) a huge part of my childhood. I spent most summers out there with my grandparents. I can't wait until my child gets old enough to enjoy it out there as much as I do! Also, camping, and anything outdoors. One thing I didn't have that I want my child to have is holiday traditions.
  • I hope this doesn't sound bad because I'm not meaning it to, but I want them to travel/experience things. Growing up we did a lot of travelling.. Not always big, sometimes just to a hotel a couple hours away for a break on the weekend. But I loved every minute of it. Now most of my fondest memories are of trips we took together.. i loved the family time and the car rides, etc. Now my toddlers get sooo excited to spend the night in a hotel.. An extra bonus if there is a waterslide of course ha. We don't do it often, but I hope as they grow up we can continue to do little things like that as a family. We live in a small town, so although there are things to do locally I feel kind of limited sometimes.

  • We grew up on 100 acres and my brother and I played in the woods from sunup to sundown. I really want that for my kid, but it is way too dangerous here in Alaska. Also, I live in the big city of Anchorage. To make up for it, DH and I plan on spending lots of family time outdoors and exploring the Alaskan wilderness!
