Spitting up

Hi mommies
I have been pumping and giving my baby a bottle. More for my own mental health, breastfeeding was just not working for me.
She is 3 weeks old and has been spitting up a lot. A few times it's almost as if she has thrown up her whole bottle. Any advice for spitting up! ?
I spoke with my dr about it and he did she is gaining weight so he wasn't worried.

Thanks!

Re: Spitting up

  • How much are you feeding at each session? How quickly is she finishing? Are you burping during or just after?

It could be that she's getting too much, too fast with a little extra air. Try slowing down the feeding and taking breaks to burp.

  • She is feeding every 3 hours and I am giving her 3 oz, as per what my dr recommended. We take about 30min to do 3oz and pause for at least 3 burps in between and always one at the end.

    ?!
  • I have to keep our Lo upright for 20-30 minutes after a bottle or he will spit up a lot. I just let him hang out on my chest while I sit up. We also used to burp him every .5 oz, but now he's been better at burping every 1 oz.
  • Ditto to comments above, also, try looking into "slow flow" nipples. They helped my friend when her baby had a lot of spitting up.
  • Look at paced feeding for breast milk bed babies. When I gave my baby a bottle she would down however much was there, but when I did the paced feeding technique she was able to show me she was done at 2.5oz and didn't spit up after.

Ditto to this. Sounds like you are doing everything you can do 3oz may just be a little too much. Good luck!!

  • How often is she spitting up? Is it forceful?
  • Is your milk refrigerated, room temp, or warm? We bottle feed (first breast milk but now formula) and have had to find the right feeding position, bottle, and number of burps. ...like others have suggested. But we have also noticed that if it's not room temp, she spits it up.
  • What type of bottles do you use? We had to switch to playtex ventaire for my other son and it seemed to help a lot.
  • I also have to keep LO upright for a few after I feed to avoid spit up
