Feelings about Zofran

I took it last time and it worked for me and DD turned out just fine. However, since Id heard about the lawsuit, I'd said I wouldn't use it this time around. I was talking to my OB about it and he said that the percentage of birth defects is the exact same with or without Zofran. Thoughts? Flame me if you want -- I'm just tired of feeling like this and it hasn't even been that long. Blahhhhh

ETA: Gingerale and Preggie Pops haven't done anything for me :(

Re: Feelings about Zofran

  • I took it with my son he is fine...
No defects.... he is a hard headed little boy if that counts ;) lol

  • I kind of have the attitude that it's fine until it isn't. Is it a risk you are willing to take? My niece was born with heart issues (not because of Zofran) and I can't even imagine having to see my child go through the things she has at such a young age. To me I will take the weeks of feeling like garbage over the agony of seeing that and the guilt that it may have been my fault. Not flaming, you asked for thoughts and those are mine.

  • I took it in my last pregnancy, no issues. This one, with new RE, the have me something new - Diclegis (sp?). It is category A (no known risks). Seems to be working pretty good as long as I don't miss a dose.
  • I've used it 3 times now. This is pregnancy #3. I'm a skeptic though, I think there is other factors to birth defects. I had to recently stop taking zofran because it just stopped working. My Dr has me on phenagren (sp?) Now and it seems to be working much better.

I had to take zofran for a little while, my doctor said it was safe to use. I was taking diclegis but then the vomiting got bad and it was no longer helping. Zofran helped me get through the roughest parts, but I only took it as needed (because of the horrible constipation side effect). I dont need it anymore, but Im still taking diclegis which helps. If your doctor says a medication is safe, I would trust him/her and take it. Maybe you can try diclegis first though, if you haven't already, to see if that helps before using zofran? Hope you feel better soon!
  • I feel ya! Nothing is touching my sickness, either. Not ginger, Unisom & B6 or meclizine. I asked my doc if Zofran was an option if it became more unbearable (as it is, I spend 80% of my day on the couch trying not to puke) and she said she loved it and that in 14 years of her delivering at that hospital (THE birthing hospital of our city) she had only had one cleft baby. She didn't mention heart tube defect babies. :-( I am in that place where I don't want to medicate if I can suffer through but I also don't want to be martyr. I have been sick since week 3 (the reason I tested!) and am closing in on week 8 and am worst between 10 am and 5 pm. I have taken OTC remedies maybe a dozen times but if this keeps up much longer I might cave and beg for Zofran or Diclegis (which is supposed to be insanely expensive).
  • Thanks for your input.

  • I took Phenagrean with my first when Zofran didn't help anymore. No issues. It would have been worse to throw everything up for 22 weeks.

I was prescribed it, but decided only to use it if I'm just dying. I'm too worried about the risks.

  • I took it with my last pregnancy and my daughter is fine. I also had to take it for a couple days with this pregnancy because I got the stomach flu and was severely dehydrated. My doc said she could give it to me again after week 12 if I still wasn't feeling good because after 12 weeks there isn't the risk of birth defects.
  • I've read some of the published studies.  It seems highly unlikely that Zofran leads to birth defects.  Keep in mind that if the control group has an incidence of birth defect of 1 in 10,000, and the drug group has an incidence of 2 in 10,000, they can claim that the risk "doubles" even though it is still incredibly low.  I dispense ondansetron (generic Zofran) to pregnant women all the time.
  • I took Zofran last pregnancy and my son was born with a congenital heart defect. Was it from Zofran? Not sure but I would never take it again!

  • I'm a FTM and was prescribed Zofran. I've opted not to take it. I can suffer through the daily MS and nauseous and the big WHAT IF, for me, is too great. Am I eliminating all chance of issues, of course not, but it's one less worry and stress.
  • I took Zofran very early with DS. He was born with 3 heart defects. Will we ever know whether that was the cause? No. But the self blame isn't worth it.
