Baby's Breathing

I know newborns aren't supposed to have regular breathing patterns, but my LO often has rapid short breaths, is that normal?

Re: Baby's Breathing

  • Yes! Very concerning but it's normal for my LO according to dr. He had said look for lips turning blue/face turning grey. Hope this helps.

  • When my daughter was around 6 weeks, my doctor told me that if my daughter had more than 40 breathes in a minute, to take her to the hospital.
  • Babies may often breathe faster than 40 breathes per minute (50-70), if they are crying or very excited, or just sleeping sometimes. They key is it shouldn't be that fast all the time, intermittently is normal. And like the first poster said look for blue color change around the lips, called circumoral cyanosis, which would cause immediate concern.
  • Thanks ladies! Sounds like I don't need to be concerned!0

  • Our pediatrician said it's normal as well, they're just figuring out how to breathe!
