Lost Hearing While Pregnant

I searched the bump and did not see anything related to this.

So anyway, since I have been pregnant I have noticed (especially more recently) that I have lost some of my hearing.  I notice it more when I'm on the phone and I can hardly hear the person on the other end.  I don't talk a lot in person to other people so I have not noticed it too much in that regard; my dh speaks loud anyway.  So my volume is all the way up on my phone and I can barely hear people on there.  Also, when I'm in the bedroom I can usually  hear the sound the alarm makes when we set it.  I can't hear that anymore either.

I did do a Google search and this does happen to some pregnant women, so I know I'm not entirely crazy.  I do plan on asking my doctor at my next appointment.

Have any of you experienced anything like this?

  • Have you been having any pain or pressure in the ear? Also, any recent sinus congestion or infection? I know that with my last pregnancy I had horrible sinus congestion and it made my ears a little more blocked/muffled than normal. And of course, with this one I had a full-blown ear infection because I had a sinus infection from work (oh, I love those germy little kiddos...a school is really just one giant dish!). As PP said, I would definitely contact your doctor (your OB or PCP can refer you if you don't usually see an ENT or specialist) just to rule out something simple (like wax or an infection) or see if it is something else. Hope you feel better!

  • I had an eye issue come up during pregnancy. It required a specialist. Strange things can happen during pregnancy for sure and don't hesitate to get it checked out. Please keep us updated!
  • This happened to a friend of mine. Unfortunately she did end up losing most of her hearing in one of her ears. She's seeing an ENT and audiologist for it. I'd go ahead and have it check out. Best of luck to you!
  • Thanks for the responses.  I have an appt coming up in a couple weeks.  I will ask my doctor then.

  • @nerdymama15 has your hearing changed at all since you first posted?
  • It has not changed anymore for good or bad.  After discussing it with my parents (who know more about my ear issues I have had most of my life) I have decided to call my OBGYN office (b/c they told me I have to go through them for everything and they recommend doctors and stuff for services they don't or can't do) and explain to them and ask for an ENT referral.  I'm thinking it's some hard impacted wax.
