Headache Help!

Has anyone else been having problems with headaches? It started last night after a giant sugar binge so today I didn't eat any sugar and tried to eat small meals and drink tons of water. I finally broke down and took acetaminophen after about 18 hours of a pounding head. I'm a paranoid mama and I'm wondering if I should be worried or if this is more or less normal?

Re: Headache Help!

  • I think it's fairly normal. Tylenol is completely safe, so maybe take some sooner next time to see if it helps? Sorry you're feeling bad.

  • I was having horrible, pounding headaches for a few days and Tylenol wasnt helping. Dr recommended Tylenol and caffeine.
  • I am not one to get headaches. I have had so many since I got pregnant. I have taken Tylenol for at least 4 of the numerous headaches and I am only 9 weeks.

  • I am getting really bad headaches. Tylenol doesn't seem to help me, unfortunately. I went out and bought a gel mask that freezes, to see if that will help. I'm actually calling my dr. about this on Monday as I am at my wits end with the headaches.

  • I've been having the same problem! I'm at 13 weeks with terrible headaches and tylonol does nothing majority of the time. My doctors told me on Monday that if it really bad since I'm basically out of the first trimester if I needed to take something stronger that it was fine. Just to not over do it. I'm prone to migraines and the only thing that helps with them is excedrin. She said it was fine to take of it comes down to it and there's no relief from tylonol.
  • I've been having regular headaches as well and have taken Tylenol when I can't handle it anymore. It's been approved by my doctor.
  • I have found that increasing my water intake has helped some, but I have also taken Tylenol if it gets to be bad enough. Also getting adjusted by my chiropractor seems to help quite a bit.
  • My midwife prescribed Tylenol w/ codeine for headaches. It only works if I take it as soon as I feel the headache coming on, otherwise it doesn't do much good and I just kind of deal with it. Hopefully we'll all get relief soon!!!
  • I've started feeling this the past couple days. Finally took prescription acetominophen (Tylenol) after suffering all day yesterday. At least I know it's "normal."

Thank you for all the advice, ladies! As much as headaches have been bumming me out, hearing that a lot of other mamas are dealing with it and it's normal makes me feel a little better.

@sjecc09 I took your advice and I've been attached to my water bottle and I'm constantly sipping which has helped A LOT! Thank you!
  • Lurking from N15, I had bad headaches first tri and my chiropractor was able to wipe them out pretty quick for me. I'd never seen one before that and was skeptical but it made all the difference. Just a thought :)
  • @ewhitledge Thank you! I actually work for a chiropractor's office so I might ask for a quick adjustment when I go in, in the morning lol!
  • @evamarta Glad the water is helping! I sometimes have to force myself to drink water, especially if I get busy at work!
  • I suffered from migraines and was on medication to prevent them before getting pregnant. I was super scared what would happen once I had to stop the meds but have been fine up until this weekend. Had the worst headache in awhile for two days Tylenol, caffeine or lots of water didn't help this one. My friend suggested putting ice on my neck and head. Surprisingly that helped, now I had to do it frequently throughout the day but I was able to at least get up and do stuff around the house. I also recommend a chiropractor mine has stopped numerous headaches for me just unfortunate they weren't open this weekend. But I'm definitely going in for an adjustment today.

    Good luck!
  • When I start to get a headache I increase my water intake. I know this is easier said than done, because water doesnt always sound good or easy to drink. But it helps for sure.
  • My doctor said the same thing after the 12th week is still better to avoid pills but nit that crítical... I've had many headaches and now I take paracetamol I've been told it's safe when I have a strong headache.
  • I talked to my doctor about headaches at my appointment today. She said it usually has to do with low glucose and recommended that I eat a piece of fruit or drink a glass of milk to restore glucose and if that doesn't work to try something with caffeine like a cup of tea. This afternoon I ate an orange when I got a headache and it definitely helped!
  • I took migrane meds before getting pregnant. I can't now. I was doing great, until I got a fierce one. Nothing, I mean, NOTHING helped. After it was over 16 hours, I wasn't eating or drinking because of the vertigo, I went to the ER. I was given some anti nausea drugs, and benadryl. Nothing! I got a dose of dilaudid. Not reccomended, but the Dr said at that point, for so long of not being well, no food or water, that meant the baby wasn't well either. It was a tough call to make, especially at only 10 weeks. I just hope it doesn't happen again, and if it does, we can have better options in the next trimester.
  • I usually have a glass of watered down Gatorade and rub peppermint oil on my temples and nape of my neck. Both help quite a bit.

  • I agree with everyone! Tylenol it is. My doc told me that it doesn't make sense to suffer when tylenol is approved to take. Someone also said caffeine as well. My doc said tylenol + small amount of caffeine. It has worked for me
  • My sister had headaches during her pregnancy and her OB/GYN said headaches are sometimes caused by not getting enough protein in your diet. My sister increased her protein in her diet and her headaches decreased. Maybe adding more protein rich foods will help!
  • @msdoyle I definitely do need to work on my diet! It was hard for a while because I only had cravings for VERY specific things and could hardly stomach anything else but I'm feeling much better now so I can focus on a more well-rounded diet.

@ewhitledge I did end up having my chiropractor do an adjustment on me and oh my gosh, I feel AMAZING. I got the best sleep I've had since I got pregnant. I usually wake up 3-4 times a night with sharp back pains and cannot get comfortable, I thought it was our bed! It also helped ease the tension headaches I've been getting. I highly recommend this to all of you ladies suffering from headaches as well! Thanks again for the great advice :)
  • I had to go off my migraine medicine when I got pregnant. I had almost no headaches for the first 10 weeks but now they are here with a vengeance. I have had some awful migraines lately! I am hoping that they are not here for the rest of the pregnancy.
  • I usually have a glass of watered down Gatorade and rub peppermint oil on my temples and nape of my neck. Both help quite a bit.

The Gatorade works for me as well. The little bit of sugar and electrolytes I get seem to help. There are also these drink tabs I got when I was running longer distances called Nuun. It has no sugar added and they're safe for pregnant/nursing women. They're lightly bubbly so it can help with upset stomach, but I found the electrolytes in these help as well. Just make sure you check if the flavor has caffeine or not bc some of them do.
