3rd Trimester

Has anyone ever switched care providers mid pregnancy?

Hey mamas, I am in the process of deciding to switch from my obgyn to a midwife in order to have a home birth. My question is for anyone who has made a switch like this before. Obviously it will be different for everyone depending on your care provider and your insurance but, after making the switch how did payments to your first care provider work? Did you owe for partial care or did your insurance cover everything you have done up until the switch? From what I understand, prenatal checkups are technically covered and it is only the delivery that you pay your care provider for. It would seem odd to leave my provider though, and not owe anything.

A little about my personal situation, I am 26 weeks pregnant. My Obgyn is not part of a team or specific hospital, so the hospital also has their own separate charges.

Thanks in advance for sharing any information.

  • I switched to a new OBGYN during my second trimester. From what I can tell they were filing insurance claims all along, but we have yet to receive any bills. Not sure if that helps, but it's my experience so far. However, I imagine that everyone's insurance is difference on what exactly is covered completely and what will be billed. I haven't paid any copayments for either OBs after my first appointments, but assume they will be billed.

  • I'm having to switch at 32 weeks! Because my previous OB is and HAS been blowing off getting a sonogram set up for me. Something I have NOT even had yet. I should have switched at 23 weeks, like everyone kept telling me. But I was comfortable with the OB, because I knew them so well. Stupid me! :-S

I'm also on Medicaid, and this is MEDICAID that recommended me to change OBs all of the sudden. Because they're not very happy with the OB I had, either! But Medicaid has not charged me for anything at all. I know normally, they cover for pretty much everything. Except for certain things like Glasses themselves if they are needed, and contacts. As well as a few other things.
  • Yes I switched at 18 weeks last pregnancy. Your insurance is still paying for the visits leading up to delivery. I'm not sure how switching to home birth will go, but when I switched the insurance company didn't even blink, they just switched too.

  • If the same physician (or provider group) provides prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum care then they can bill with the global maternity fee and all care is bundled together.  So if you switch providers mid pregnancy then the provider you switched to could theoretically bill the global maternity fee (I believe this is pro-rated some based on the date of entry into care with them). Your original OB could also bill for any prenatal care and services they provided as they won't be billing with the global maternity fee as they won't be delivering.
  • Next Monday is when my transfer FINALLY goes through at 39 weeks lol. It only took a damn month. Anyway, my new office told me whatever I paid the former office towards hospital fees that my former practice would have to reimburse me.
