Help! 3rd time moms!

I need advice! I have an 09 Subaru Legacy. DS is 6 and still in a 5 point harness car seat. DD is two and forward facing in a 5 point harness car seat. I don't know how to fit another car seat in the back seat. Im okay with moving DS to a booster. Does anyone have any advice on smaller car seats? I don't want to have to buy a new car. This one gets paid off in August and we can't afford another car. Is it possible to even fit three car seats in the back? Help!

Yes it is!! We have an older 4Runner and fit 3 across. We have a Graco Nautilus, Harmony Defender (both FF 5pt harness), and a Diono Radian (RF) right now but used the Babytrend Flexlock infant seat.

Shipping on the Radian took longer than expected so we got a cheap Cosco Scenara which worked with the other two seats as well.

  • Thanks! I'll look into those. My husband doesn't think it going to be comfortable for the kids but we can't afford a new car and ours is almost paid off! I'm determined to make it work. :) lol
  • We were freaking about a new vehicle when I found out we were pregnant with #3 and I was super determined to make it work as well. My boys have no complaint. I mean the carseats prevent them from actually being squished and it doesn't effect their legroom.

I had my oldest in the middle because he can buckle himself in and the younger ones on each side so I could reach them easy. We had to change it up a little since my oldest started school and I drop him off/pick him. He is now on the outside passenger, next oldest in the middle, and the baby behind the driver side. I do have to reach over the baby's seat but it's still pretty easy.

With #4 on the way we don't have a choice but to get a new vehicle. No fun.

  • Yeah we had the youngest behind the passenger but had to move her to behind the driver beacuse of school drop off to. I'm hoping I can put a booster in the middle for him, and he will just have to climb? I don't know. This baby will have to go behind the passenger beacuse we will have to move the seat up pretty far and my husband is tall. Maybe I'll just need to cave and buy a used mini van. Lol
  • I promise it's doable. Could the baby go in the middle? I know it's not exactly ideal and you may need to move the front seats forward everyone but that way your H won't have a problem if your middle kiddo rides behind him and your oldest won't have to crawl in.

  • Haha me too! Car seats are cheaper then buying a new car. That might work. Our friend is giving us their infant seat, so I can try and see. I plan on doing tons of research too.
  • You've got this!!

How are you feeling in general about three kiddos? I know I was so nervous about being outnumbered. It was a surprisingly easy transition though.

  • Oh also re-carseats some stores will let you try them out in your vehicle to make sure they fit before buying them. I think buy buy baby and Bru do this.

I'm.. Okay. Lol I'm in school full time and stay home. I've got one in kinder and a 2 year old. If changes some plans around and DH planned on getting fixed in a couple months. He didn't want a third. So it's been rough on him. But we have supportive family and friends, so I know it will be okay. Plus we live in a tiny two bedroom apartment and don't think we can afford a 3 bedroom. But I do think it will be an easy transition. Plus my mom said she'd watch the older kids for a couple days while I adjust to a baby.

Okay is a great answer lol. That's a lot to process and figure out all at once. This one is a surprise for us as well. We had talked about #4 but I was really on the fence because my H works OOT and financial stuff as well. We rent a house right now and were planning on buying, but with the new baby and needing a new vehicle I doubt that's going to happen. We were in a tiny 2 bedroom place for a bit and while it wasn't ideal, it worked. Older boys roomed together and the baby was in our room. We are in a 3 bedroom now and that's still the way it's set up since we need a guestroom because we live so far away from family.

My mom is moving this way in a few weeks. I am so incredibly thankful. Last pregnancy was hard toting both kids to all my appts alone.

  • Can we start a frugal/cheapskate thread? Perhaps a sticky one? This is a great thread and a topic I never would have considered! Having to buy a new vehicle to fit 3 LOs... that's a big consideration. Good luck getting it figured out! Sounds like a puzzle, but a doable one.

    That's a great idea!
When we bought our car, it was something I hadn't thought about either. I'm hoping since this is my third time around I can share with FTM.
  • I feel you on this one as I am in the same boat. I just bought my car this past May and wasn't even thinking about 3 kids and fitting the car seats. I'm determined to make it work though mostly because I don't really have a choice haha.. There is a fb page that is really helpful with suggestions for car seats that will fit your kiddos and car. Here's the link.. https://www.facebook.com/groups/carseatorg/
Hope you find something that works!
