Time off?

Hi Ladies,
I'm 7 wks 3 days and feeling like complete and utter poop most of the time. I have every symptom possible including throwing up almost every meal, so I'm considering taking a disability leave from my work for a week or so. I feel like a weanie do so, so I wanted to see if anyone else has had to do the same? I am a preschool special Ed teacher, so it's a high-energy job with minimal flexibility, otherwise I might not pursue an actual leave.
Looking forward to seeing your responses. Thanks!

Have you talked to your doctor about taking something to help alleviate the morning sickness?
  • Make sure to check the disability/maternity policy at your school. If you take a week off now, it may mean a week less with baby. That's how it works at my company. It's 12 weeks for pregnancy related illness/ disability total. just make sure you have all the info before you make a decision.

And I hope you feel better soon!
  • @mrsschmity I emailed my OB today. We'll brainstorm.
    @chesterdoodle thanks good info.
  • I am! My job is not flexible and I work one on one an hour at a time with clients so I just couldn't do it. I talked to my midwife about her giving me a note recommending disability from work.
  • Thanks @adiaz132003, comforting to know another in the same boat, though I hope our worse symptoms clear up soon!

Yeah it sucks. I have alarms set to remind me to eat and drink. I feel like I won't be normal till 14 weeks. Ugh
  • I hear ya. I decided to take the time off. I'm ok as long as I'm at home on the couch but as soon as I get up to do something or go out for anything I'm vomiting violently. Maybe we'll be lucky and symptoms will subside earlier.
  • I haven't been able to work since I was about 5 weeks. Luckily I have a good support system to help me out but being stuck in bed coupled with these hormones makes me feel so awful. I just have to remember it's about what is best for the baby. And remember to stay hydrated. My new hobby is eating ice chips. Lol
  • I'm not bad enough to justify taking time off, but there have been many days of feeling nauseated all day long where i think "pregnant women should be allowed a few weeks off in bed!" I'm sure I'll think this many times. You have to take care of yourself! I don't have any sick days left until February or so, and that concerns me! Luckily I have strong support at home, so if it gets worse I can do whatever I need to do. I'll likely leave work after the baby arrives, so i can always use my family leave now.
  • Hey Kayla, I'm in the same boat. Just hit 7 weeks today, and have been unable to go to work at all this week. I'm a family doctor, so I usually see one patient after another every 15 minutes all day, and with the constant nausea, total exhaustion and added sore throat / head cold this week I couldn't manage. It's very hard if you've got those symptoms and a high energy challenging, non-stop job. You know, I feel terrible, like I'm letting down people who rely on me, but there's nothing I can do about it unfortunately. And I feel so much better having had a break, I think it's worth it.

I'd say if you need the time off, take it.
  • I'm not in the same boat (thankfully!) just wanted to say I'm sorry you're feeling so sick.

My SIL took some time off from waitressing in the beginning because she was so sick everyday.

You're not a "weenie"... You are growing a human and it's hard work!!

  • Thanks everyone!
@zanaerob1 I also feel like I'm letting people down since I work with families and a classroom staff, which was a big part of my hesitation. Thanks for relating :).
