Egg quality issue?

I had my retrieval last Monday and we had a great response, 24 eggs retrieved! Then the following day the nurse called to say 15 fertilized. Not as many as I hoped, but still a great number to work with! Then the 3 day call - we still had 15 going strong. Then the 5 day call, we were down to 4!! FOUR?! What the ^#&*!I@ happened?! Then today, I got the final call - 3 made it to freeze! What?! Out of 24?!

A little background - I am 35 and my DH is 36. We have been TTC for over 3 years. I was previously married for 10 years and hadn't been on BC for almost that whole time. I would say it's been at least 12 years that I have not been on BC and was either actively TTC or just letting nature run its course. Not one single accidental pregnancy or deliberate pregnancy until recently. That I know of. We started seeing our RE at the end of May and had the first of 3 IUIs that following June. The second IUI resulted in a pregnancy, but we had an early miscarriage.

So now I wonder, do I have an egg quality issue? How many early miscarriages/chemicals have there been? Has it been present the whole time? Is that why we miscarried? And most importantly, can we overcome this?

I have been so worried about it the last few days and I cannot get in to see my doctor until next Tuesday! I am hoping someone knows a little about this or can offer us some hope because I will probably go insane Googling it and thinking about it all week.

Oh, I don't even know the grades of the 3 embryos.

Thanks in advance!

Egg quality is what it sounds like to me.  I had an issue like this.  8 out of 13 eggs of mine fertilized and after 5 days we only had 1 embryo.  We transfered that 1 embryo and got our BFP.  Take heart.  You definitely still have a chance!

After the doc transferred that one embryo he told me that it is likely we have an egg quality issue because usually after fertilization it is no longer the sperm that is the issue.  He had told me that if that embryo didn't work that he would know what to change for next time.  Well, we are in the middle of our "next time" and essentially he has upped my dosages of stims so that we get more eggs to work with.  Whereas the first time I stimmed at night only with Bravelle and Menopur, this time around they are having me stim in the morning AND at night with menopur and follistim.

  • Thank you so much for the encouraging words and congrats on your BFP!! I don't know what we could change if this frozen transfer doesn't work because I was on 275 follistim and 75 menopur and wound up with OHSS and no fresh transfer. Well, maybe they would decrease the doses in hopes of fewer but better quality eggs and then a fresh transfer. Ahh, so much to think about!  Today is CD1 and baseline is Wednesday so I will know then if there are cysts and what protocol we need to follow. Thanks again, definitely gives me hope to hear success stories!!
  • I don't know much, but if it were me I would think it is better to have quality over quantity. So even though only a few made it, remember those were the healthier and stronger ones! :D
